ASTON, Pa. - The Cabrini women's basketball team's hope of qualifying for the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament came to a halt on Thursday night following a 73-69 loss versus Neumann University at the Mirenda Center. Junior guard Laura Caron led the Cavaliers with 16 points in the season-ending loss.
Caron shot 5-for-11 from the field overall, also pulling down nine rebounds and dishing three assists. Freshman guard MaryKate McCann scored in double figures, as well, netting 10 points.
Sophomore forward Melissa Kudzmas, freshman guard Brittany Sandone and freshman forward Colleen Stewart each scored eight points. Stewart claimed eight boards.
Junior forward Jenn Casper paired seven points with four rebounds.
Cabrini shot 50.0 percent from the field in the first half, but faced a one-point deficit, 41-40, at the intermission. Kudzmas led the Cavaliers' offense at the break with eight points.
The Blue & White a brief lead in the early-goings of the second half, owning a three-point advantage, 46-43, with 16:07 remaining. Caron supplied Cabrini with its first lead of the contest on the Cavaliers' first possession of the closing 20 minutes.
However, a 20-8 run from the Knights over the next 10 minutes put Cabrini in a 12-point hole, 66-54, with 4:26 left. The Blue & White still trailed by 12 points, 70-58, at the 2:45 mark.
The Cavaliers took one last gasp, putting together an 11-0 run over the next 2:17 and pulling within one point, 70-69, with 28 seconds remaining. Caron scored the final six points of the spurt, knocking down a 3-point field goal and converting an old-fashion 3-point play.
Yet, Neumann (18-7, 15-1 CSAC) shot 3-of-4 from the foul line in the final 24 seconds to avoid the collapse and secure the victory. Katie Young (13 points, 13 rebounds) and Sami Borcky (14 points, 1- rebounds) each recorded double-doubles for the first-place Knights in the win.
The Cavaliers' loss ends the career of the team's lone senior, Julie Bonomo. Bonomo played in 68 career games with the Blue & White, and was a member of two teams that won the CSAC title and advanced to two NCAA Tournaments.
Cabrini finishes the 2010-11 season with a 10-15 overall record.
