RADNOR, Pa – The Cabrini women's basketball team remains in the thick of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) playoff hunt following a decisive 80-61 victory versus Immaculata University on Thursday night at Nerney Field House. Junior guard Laura Caron led the Cavaliers, scoring a career-best 24 points in the win.
Caron shot 8-for-14 from the field and knocked down 7-of-10 attempts from the free throw line. She also paired a team-high eight assists with five rebounds.
Freshman guard Brittany Sandone reach double figures for the sixth time in the last eight games, totaling 17 points on 4-for-7 shooting. Sandone connected on 3-of-6 3-point tries and converted 6-of-7 foul shots.
Sophomore forward Melissa Kudzmas matched a career-high scoring 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting. Freshman guard MaryKate McCann and freshman forward Colleen Stewart each contributed six points. Stewart gathered a team-high eight rebounds.
The Cavalier shot only 35.3 percent from the field in the first half, but managed to stake claim to an eight-point advantage at the intermission, 34-26. Cabrini thrice led by as much as 16 points in the opening 20 minutes.
The Blue & White kept its foot on the gas to begin the second half, pushing its lead to 17 points, 50-33, with 12:50 remaining. Caron powered the Cavaliers' separation from IU, scoring 12 straight points in the early-goings of the second half.
Kudzmas' lay-in at the 4:06 mark ballooned Cabrini's cushion to 22 points, 68-46. The Cavaliers led by a game-high 23 points, 72-49, with 2:24 remaining after a lay-in from McKann.
Caron scored 20 of her 24 points in the second half. The Blue & White shot 60.9 percent from the floor in the closing 20 minutes.
Cabrini out-scored Immaculata in bench points, 27-4, and in points off turnovers, 27-10.
Junior guard Bridget Welz tallied a team-high 24 points for the Mighty Macs in the loss. Sophomore guard Chrissy Esbensen and sophomore forward Leah Kuczynski each scored 10 points.
The victory keeps the Cavaliers in the hunt for one of the six playoff spots available for the CSAC Tournament. Immaculata (13-7, 8-3) came into tonight's contest in second place of the CSAC South Division, trailing first-place Neumann University by one game.
Cabrini (7-13, 6-5) is idle on Saturday, but returns to CSAC play on Monday, Feb. 7 at rival Gwynedd-Mercy College. Game time versus the Griffins is set for 6 p.m.
