RADNOR, Pa. – After three consecutive losses, the Cabrini College women's basketball team got back in the win column with today's 67-59 victory over Marywood University at Nerney Field House. The win improves the Cavaliers' record to 5-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference and at 7-7 overall.
Cabrini handed Marywood its 1st CSAC loss today with tough rebounding and defense and solid free throw shooting. The Blue and White secured 49-35 rebounding advantage and held the Pacers to just 29.8% shooting from the floor. The Cavaliers shot a season-high 84% from the free throw line, including 19-22 in the second half.
After Wednesday's disappointing loss at Rosemont, the Cavaliers took the court today with a high level of intensity. The game's first 10 minutes featured five ties and three lead changes, as each team tried to gain a bit of momentum.
Sophomore
Colleen Stewart connected on a lay-up with 10:33 to play in the first half to tie the score at 10. It would be the last time in the game Cabrini would trail. Four consecutive points by freshman Meghan Decker gave the Cavalier their biggest lead of the half at seven points with just over one minute to play before the break.
After 20 minutes, the Blue and White took a 25-23 lead into the locker room. Eight points from Stewart helped the Cavaliers to an 18-10 halftime advantage in points in the paint.
The second half started much like the first. Though the Cavaliers never trailed, the Pacers kept the game within reach, even tying the score three time in the first 10 minutes of the half.
A Pacer lay-up cut Cabrini's lead to 40-39 with 9:22 to play, but the Cavaliers responded. Sophomore
Amanda Cundari knocked down a deep three-pointer, sending the Blue and White on a 15-2 run. With 4:18 left on the clock, Cabrini found itself with a commanding 55-41 lead.
The Cavaliers connected on their final 12 free throws in the game's final two minutes to seal the win.
McCann tied a career high with 19 points, including 8-9 from the charity stripe. Stewart and fellow sophomore
Annie Rivituso tallied 10 points each. Stewart also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Freshman
Megan Decker displayed a solid all-around game with six points, five rebounds, five assists, and five steals.
Freshman Maggie Presnal led three Marywood (11-4, 6-1 CSAC) players in double figures with 14 points.
The Cavaliers will look to continue its winning vibe on Wednesday when the Gwynedd-Mercy College Griffins pay a visit to Nerney Field House. Tip is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
