RADNOR, Pa. - A late spell of cold shooting sent the Cabrini College women's basketball team to a 50-40 home loss at the hands of Gwynedd-Mercy College tonight at Nerney Field House. The loss drops the Cavaliers to 7-8 on the year and 5-3 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
The Blue and White shot its second lowest percentage from the floor this season, 25.4% and missed all 14 of its three
point attempts in the loss.
The Cavaliers got off to a great start, scoring the game's first six points. A
Brittany Sandone jumper gave Cabrini a 12-5 lead just five minutes into play. The Griffins responded with a 14-4 run of their own to take a 19-16 lead with eight minutes left in the half.
Cabrini took a slim 24-23 lead into the locker room for the halftime break. Sophomore
Leithie Faison led the Cavaliers with eight points in the game's opening stanza. Freshman
Megan Decker added six points and sophomore
Annie Rivituso grabbed six rebounds.
Both teams struggled to get their footing in the early going in the second half. Sophomore
Michelle Petronaci's lay-up gave Cabrini a 31-28 lead with 10 minutes to play.
The Blue and White went four minutes before its next field goal, another Petronaci lay-up with 5:28 on the clock. Cabrini's next bucket came with just :27 left, trailing 50-38.
Cabrini shot just 2-12 from the floor and surrendered seven turnovers in the game's final minutes. Conversely, the Griffins shot 6-10 over the same span and connected on 5-7 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Faison and Decker led Cabrini with eight points. Decker also paced the Cavaliers with nine rebounds, two assists and three blocked shots.
MaryKate McCann also added six points.
Rivituso finished with eight boards, while Sandone and fellow sophomore
Colleen Stewart grabbed five caroms apiece.
Freshman Shea Wassel led the Griffins (11-6, 7-1 CSAC) with a double-double with game-highs of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Blue and White will hit the road on Saturday when they travel to Clarks Summit, Pa to face Baptist Bile College. The CSAC game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
