RADNOR, Pa. – After a nip and tuck 25 minutes of basketball, a nine minute field goal drought sent the Cabrini College women's basketball team to a 53-40 loss to the visiting Immcaulata University Mighty Macs. The loss drops the Cavaliers to an even 5-5 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference standings and 7-11 overall.
Sophomore
Leithie Faison led the Cavaliers with 12 points, including the Blue and White's only two three-pointers for the game. Fellow sophomore
Brittany Sandone added nine points for the Cavaliers.
As one would expect from two of the best defensive team in the CSAC, tonight's game was a defensive struggle as the teams combined to force 37 turnovers and shoot a combined 27.8% from the floor.
The Cavaliers took an early lead, scoring the game's first five points. The Mighty Macs responded with a 7-2 run to tie the score at 7-7 midway through the half. Cabrini refused to give up their lead. A
Michelle Petronaci lay-up gave the Blue and White a 19-15 lead with less than one minute left before the break.
Immaculata netted the final five points of the half, taking a 20-19 lead into the halftime break.
The Mighty Macs opened the second stanza with four quick points but Cabrini quickly reduced the deficit to 28-26 after a Faison jumper.
Just as Immaculata's shooting heated up, the Cavaliers went cold, allowing the Mighty Macs to go a 14-1 run over the next nine-plus minutes to take a 42-27 lead with 6:53 on the clock.
Cabrini managed to cut the deficit to seven points twice in the game's final 4:13 but could never get any closer as the Mighty Macs went 7-10 from the charity stripe in the game's final five minutes.
The Cavaliers shot a season-low 24.6% from the floor and made just two of their 15 three-point attempts.
Sophomores
MaryKate McCann and
Annie Rivituso grabbed a game-high eight rebounds each.
Junior Chrissy Esbensen led the Mighty Macs with a game-high 13 points, including 7-10 from the free throw line.
The Cavaliers will look to end their recent skid on Saturday when they travel to Hackettstown, N.J. to face Centenary College.
