SCRANTON, Pa. – The Cabrini College women's soccer team found its scoring touch today against Keystone College as the Cavaliers topped the Giants 3-0. The victory improved the Blue and White to 3-1-3 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference and 4-6-3 overall.
Cabrini's three goals today mark the Cavaliers highest scoring game since November 2, 2011 when the Blue and White topped Marywood University 3-2 in the semifinal round of the CSAC Tournament.
The Cavaliers opened the scoring in the 16th minute when sophomore
Melissa Scanzano converted a pass from freshman
Julianna Ardire into the sophomore's second goal of the season.
Cabrini doubled its lead in the 24th minute on a rarely seen play. After a penalty in the Keystone 18-yard box resulted in a Cavaliers' penalty kick, senior goaltender
Maddy Edwards stepped to the penalty spot and blasted the ball into the net. The goal was the senior's sixth of her career and first since October 22, 2010.
Sophomore
Gabby Meck extended the lead in the 55th minute with an unassisted tally, her first of the campaign.
The Cavaliers outshot the Giants 26-8, including an 18-7 advantage in the second half, marking the third time this season the Blue and White have recorded at least 20 shots. Sixteen Cavaliers fired a shot in the match, led by senior
Dana Drake's four and senior
Alex Tralie's three.
The Blue and White also secures nine corner kicks to Keystone's two.
Edwards added a pair of saves to her goal , sharing the shutout with junior
Sarah Means.
Samantha Littleford led the Giants with five shots, while goaltender Katelyn Coon recorded nine saves.
Cabrini will return to action on Tuesday, October 16 when its hosts Notre Dame University of Maryland. The CSAC tilt is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
