RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini College women's basketball captured the Battle for Eagle Road for the first time since February 2008 with tonight's 69-49 wire-to-wire win over Eastern University. The victory improves the Cavaliers to 2-1 on the season.
The Blue and White used a dominant defense and rebounding effort to ground the Eagles. Cabrini held eastern to 33% shooting from the field in the opening half
and outrebounded the Eagles 47-30, including 22-7 on the offensive glass.
Sophomore
Amber Keys recorded her first career double-double with a game high 17 points and 13 rebounds, including eight on the offensive side. Junior
Brittany Sandone added 15 points and three steals. Fellow junior
Colleen Stewart also had a career day with 16 rebounds, four assists and four steals.
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early lead as Sandone tallied the game's first five points. The Blue and White forced eight Eastern turnovers in the game's first 10 minutes as it built a 19-1 lead, holding the Eagles without a field goal the first 10 minutes of the half.
Cabrini continued to pressure Eastern throughout the first half, establishing a 39-22 lead at the halftime break. The Cavaliers dominated the lane, outscoring Eastern 26-4 in the paint and tallied 12 points off 15 first half turnovers. Cabrini shot 46.3% from the field in the opening 20 minutes, led by Keys' 14 points on 7-9 shooting.
The Cavaliers scored again scored the first five points of the second half, extending their lead to 23 points five minutes into the second frame. A
Megan Decker steal and lay-up pushed the Blue and White advantage to 57-32 with 8:43 on the clock.
Eastern cut its deficit to 57-42 with just north of five minutes remaining, but a Keys free throw and back-to-back Stewart lay-ins immediately returned the lead to 20 points.
Decker finished with 12 points in just 17 minutes of action. Senior
Laura Caron was solid with four points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.
The Cavaliers closed the game with a 42-16 advantage in points in the paint and turned 24 Eastern turnovers into 24 points.
Cabrini held Eastern sophomore Meghan Nowak to 14 points, less than half of her scoring average in Eastern's opening games. Sophomore Kaleigh Boreman and freshman Tori Grossi added nine points each in the loss.
The Cavaliers will return to the court on Tuesday, November 27 when they travel to the University of Scranton. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
