Women's Basketball Falls Short at Scranton

Box Score

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Cabrini College women's basketball team fell to 2-2 on the season after tonight's 57-53 loss at the University of Scranton.  Junior Brittany Sandone led the Blue and White with 19 points, including matching a career high with five three-pointers on eight attempts.

Fellow junior Colleen Stewart posted a career best 15 points.  Sophomore Amber Keys grabbed a game high nine rebounds, while Stewart joined senior Laura Caron with seven boards.

Scranton grabbed an early lead, scoring the game's first six points before Stewart knocked down a jumper nearly four minutes into play.  Stewart tallied Cabrini's first five points of the game, cutting the deficit to one point.  The Royals responded with 8-0 run, putting the Blue and White in a nine point hole eight minutes before halftime.

After 20 minutes, the Cavaliers trailed 25-19.  The Blue and White shot just 22.6% from the floor in the opening half and connected on just 2-9 from beyond the arc.  Stewart led Cabrini with five first half points, while Meredith Mesaris paced the Royals with 13.

Scranton's lead hovered between two and six points for most of the second half, but a Sandone three pointer with 7:28 on the clock tied the score for the first time since 0-0.  A Mesaris three immediately returned the lead to Scranton.  After a Cabrini turnover, Scranton's Lindsay Fluehr knocked down a pair of free throws, returning the Royals' advantage to five points.

The Cavaliers got as close as three points in the late going, but could get no closer.

Cabrini improved its second half shooting performance to 40% from the floor and doubled its three point output from the first half.  Both teams scored 16 points in the paint and grabbed 17 second half rebounds, but the Cavaliers' 10-5 advantage on the offensive glass, led to additional scoring opportunities.

Mesaris led the Royals (5-0) with 26 points on 11-18 shooting from the floor.  Erin Boggan added 11 points for Scranton.

The Blue and White will return to action on Monday, December 3 when they open Colonial States Athletic Conference play with a trip to Baltimore to face Notre Dame University of Maryland.  Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
