Volleyball Tops Dutchmen, Advance to ECAC Semifinal

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini College volleyball team advanced to the semifinal round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Region Tournament with tonight's 3-0 win over Lebanon Valley College.  The victory extends the Cavaliers streak of 20-win seasons to five after improving to 20-9 on the year.

Senior Danielle Carrozza recorded her 11th double-double on the season, including in four straight matches, pairing a match high 12 kills with 12 digs.   Senior Meg Ryan and sophomore Molly Fox chipped in with 10 kills each.  Junior Sophia Sokolovich scored a match high18 digs, while freshman Cassidy Koenig dished out 39 assists.  

The clubs exchanged points early in the opening set until a Ryan kill tied the score at 3-3 and Carrozza stepped to the service line.  The senior led the Blue and White to a quick 9-3 advantage and the Cavaliers never looked back.  The Dutchmen got as close as 18-16 late in the set, but another Ryan kills returned the service and the momentum to Cabrini as the Cavaliers took the first set 25-19.

The Cavaliers picked up the second set where they ended the first, as junior Kristy Riley opened the set with a service ace.  Minutes later, the Blue and White went on a 5-1 spurt to take an 8-3 lead.  Cabrini built its lead to six points when Ryan and junior Michele Fitz scored a double block to make the score 16-10.   Lebanon Valley got as close as 16-13 before Cabrini ran the lead back to six points at 20-14.  Kills by Carrozza and Fitz sandwiched a service ace by Sokolovich, giving Cabrini the 25-17 set win.

Cabrini grabbed an early lead in the third set before the Dutchmen rallied to tie the score at five.  Lebanon Valley trailed 11-9 before four consecutive points gave it a 13-11 lead, its first of the match.  The Blue and White immediately responded, tying the score at 13.  The Dutchmen were content to side out back and forth until Fox recorded a kill to tie the set at 17.  Cabrini scored the next four points to take a 21-17 lead en route to closing the match with the 25-21 set victory.

Freshman Alli Quirk and sophomore Steph Klunk led the Dutchmen with 10 kills each, while freshman Allie Garrett added 12 digs.

With the victory the fourth seeded Cavaliers advance to the semifinal round where they will face the top seeded Bethany College Bison on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Bethany, W.V.  The Bison topped No. 8 Penn State Behrend 3-0.

Saturday's second semifinal pits No. 2 Moravian College and No. 3 Swarthmore College, after each won their first round matches by matching 3-0 scores.

The winners of Saturday's semifinal matches will meet later that evening at 5:00 p.m. for the South Region Championship.
