DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – After holding a slim halftime lead, the Cabrini College women's basketball lost its scoring touch en route to a 49-37 loss at Delaware Valley College. The Cavaliers tallied just 10 points after the break as they fell to 5-3 on the season.
The Blue and White shot just 20.8% from the floor, connecting on 2-19 from beyond the three point arc, and 5-11 from the free throw line in the loss. Sophomore
Megan Decker led Cabrini with nine points, while fellow sophomore
Amber Keys added eight points in her first start of the season. Junior
Colleen Stewart grabbed a team high 12 rebounds.
The Cavaliers jumped out to an early lead as a jumper by junior
Brittany Sandone gave the Blue and White a 6-2 lead just 3:28 into the game. The Aggies responded with a 9-2 to take its first lead of the game at 11-10. Almost immediately, Cabrini retook the lead and built it back to four points after the opening 20 minutes of action.
While the lead changed hands six times, Cabrini used its tried and true formula of controlling the lane and the glass to build its halftime lead. The Cavaliers secured 31 first half rebounds, including 13 on the offensive glass, to Delaware Valley's 18. The Blue and White also tallied 14 points in the paint, 13 coming off second chance opportunities.
It took the Aggies 72 seconds to regain the lead, as the Cavaliers failed to connect on a field goal attempt for the first 10:30 of the second half. By that point, Delaware Valley had established a 38-30 lead and complete control of the game's momentum.
The Cavaliers certainly had its chance to get back into the game, as they held the Aggies without a field goal for the final 9:43 of the game. Cabrini, however, failed to capitalize as it shot just 3-36 from the floor after the halftime break, including 0-9 from three point range. The Blue and White forced six Aggies turnovers and seven missed shots, but Delaware Valley held its lead from the charity stripe, knocking down 11-12 in the game's final nine minutes.
Sandone finished with six points, while fellow junior
Annie Rivituso added five. Freshman
Maura O'Connell grabbed a season high nine rebounds in just 11 minutes of action. Senior
Laura Caron grabbed eight caroms.
Freshman Kelsey Kilpatrick led the Aggies with 17 points off the bench, including 8-8 from the free throw line. Senior Emily Soper totaled eight points, 15 rebounds and seven blocked shots.
The Cavaliers will take a break for the Christmas holiday and return to action on December 28 when they face Kenyon College in Daytona Beach, Fla. at the Land of Magic Classic. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
