GWYNEDD, Pa. – The last time Cabrini and Gwynedd-Mercy women's basketball teams played, the Cavaliers suffered a cold streak allowing the Griffins to take a commanding lead. The loss started the Blue and White on a six game losing skid.
Oh, what a difference one month makes. Tonight, the Cavaliers closed the regular season with their fifth consecutive win after defeating Gwynedd-Mercy 71-60. The win snaps the Griffins 13-game win streak.
Sophomore
Brittany Sandone led four Cavaliers in double figure scoring with 23 points. Fellow sophomore
Colleen Stewart tied a career-high with 12 points, while
MaryKate McCann and
Renee Deas combined for 21 points.
Cabrini got off to a great start as Stewart opened the game with back-to-back buckets leading to an early 9-2 lead. The Griffins responded with a 10-0 run to take a 12-9 lead with 12:32 left in the first half. Five minutes later, with the Cavaliers trailing 15-11, everything changed.
A blocked shot by sophomore
Leithie Faison helped change the game's momentum in favor of the Blue and White. Over the final seven minutes of the half, Cabrini outscored Gwynedd-Mercy 26-6. Sandone led the offensive change with four three-pointers during the run, including treys on three consecutive possessions.
Stewart's short jumper sent the Cavaliers to halftime with a 37-21 lead. Cabrini shot 47.1% from the floor as Stewart and Sandone combined for 19 first half points. The Cavaliers also outrebounded the Griffins 24-14, led by freshman
Amber Keys' seven boards in seven minutes.
As one would expect from a team riding a 13-game win streak, the Griffins chipped away at Cabrini's lead early in the second half. By the 13:50 mark, Gwynedd-Mercy sliced the Blue and White's lead to just five points.
A McCann lay-up midway through the half capped a 9-2 Cabrini run, extending the lead back to 13 points.
The Griffins continued to scrap, again cutting Cabrini's lead to six points with just under four minutes to play. Again the Cavaliers responded, as Sandone and Deas knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to push the lead back to 12 points.
Keys led Cabrini on the glass with a career-high nine rebounds. Stewart grabbed eight rebounds, while Sandone added seven.
Freshman
Megan Decker finished with six points, six rebounds, and five assists.
Jess Rotella led four Griffins (18-7, 14-2 CSCA) in double figure scoring with 19 points.
The Cavaliers will open the 2012 CSAC tournament on Monday on the road against a yet to be determined team.
