Volleyball Aces 3-1 Victory over Widener

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini College volleyball team improved its current win streak to four matches after defeating the Widener University Pride tonight at Nerney Field House.  The victory improves the Cavaliers to 6-4 on the season.  

For the second time in less than a week, the Blue and White used a balanced offense to stop the Pride.  Cabrini topped Widener in a tough five set match on Friday night at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational.

The Cavaliers secured a 25-20 win the first set which featured nine ties.  Cabrini jumped out 7-2 early in the second set before Widener rallied, tying the score at 13.  Both teams exchanged points, with the Blue and White eventually taking the set 25-23.

Cabrini also grabbed an early lead in the third game before the Pride mounted a comeback.  A four point run gave Widener its first lead of the set at 14-12 and they never looked back. Posting a 25-17 set three victory.

The Blue and White scored the first four points of the fourth set and continued to extend its advantage, extending its lead to 21-12 late in the game.  Widener responded with six consecutive points before Cabrini closed the match out with a 25-18 win.

Cabrini got a strong performance at the net from the trio of senior Meg Ryan, junior Michele Fitz and freshman Jen Grenauer, each of whom recorded at least 11 kills.  Grenauer's 12 tied Widener's Kaitlin Schnalzer for game-high honors.  Fitz also recorded the match's lone solo block and five of Cabrini's 10 block assists.

Freshman Cassidy Koenig continued to control the Blue and White offensive attack with a career-high 42 assists on the night.   

The Cavaliers also boasted a balanced defensive effort, as four players posted at least 11 digs on the night.  Junior libero Sophia Sokolovich led the club with 24 while senior Danielle Carrozza added 18.  Koenig and junior Kristy Riley also combined for 23 digs.

Schanlzer's 12 kills led the Pride, while Angela DiMaria and Jessica Dembeck added 11 each.  Meghan Spence joined Sokolovich with 24 digs, while Maggie Greenberg handed out 37 assists for Widener (4-8).

The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday when they travel down the Main Line to face Bryn Mawr College.  First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
