Drake's Late Goal Leads to Tie at Gwynedd-Mercy

Box Score

GWYNEDD, Pa. – A late goal in the final minutes of regulation allowed the Cabrini College women's soccer team to salvage a 1-1 tie at Gwynedd-Mercy College this afternoon.  The Cavaliers remain unbeaten in Colonial States Athletic Conference play at 1-0-2 and 2-5-2 overall.

The Blue and White fell behind early as Gwynedd-Mercy's Michelle Pool slotted a pass, sending Alyssa Figeroa on a breakaway that she finished past Cabrini
goaltender Maddy Edwards.  The Griffins carried their 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.

While Gwynedd-Mercy had the lead on the score board, the stat sheet represented an evenly played opening 45 minutes.  The Griffins took four shots to Cabrini's two, with Edwards making a pair of first half saves.  The Cavaliers also secured three corner kicks to two for the Griffins.

The second half played out much like the first, both teams creating solid scoring chances, with six shots each.  Neither team could find the scoring connection until the 89th minute.  The Cavaliers secured a free kick deep in Gwynedd-Mercy territory.

Sophomore Melissa Scanzano found senior Dana Drake in the penalty area.  Drake controlled the ball in a scrum and fired it past Griffins goaltender Jessica Tadley.  The goal is Drake's first of the season and 10th of her career.

The Blue and White secured a pair of corner kicks in the first overtime period and totaled four shots in the extra 20 minutes but could not get the game-winner.

Junior Bree Thompson and freshman Dana Peterson led the Cavaliers with three shots each, while Drake and Thompson combined for the Blue and White's three shots on goal.   Edwards recorded four saves on the day.

The Blue and White will travel to Immaculata University on Tuesday to face the Mighty Macs.  Game time set for 4:00 p.m. at Immaculata's Draper Walsh Stadium.
