RADNOR, Pa. - The Cabrini College volleyball extended its win streak to nine matches with today's 3-0 victory over the visiting Baptist Bible College Defenders. The victory improves Cabrini's overall record to 11-4 and 4-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
The nine consecutive victories marks the Cavaliers' longest win streak since 2009, when the Blue and White posted 10 straight wins, culminating with the 2009
CSAC championship. Today's win is also Cabrini's 15th consecutive regular season win over a CSAC opponent.
Having met on September 8 at the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational, the clubs were familiar with each other and it showed on the court.
The first half of the opening set was back and forth as neither team could really establish a rhythm. With the score tied 14-14, Cabrini gave itself a little cushion. A Defender service error gave the Cavaliers the lead and sent senior
Danielle Carrozza to the service line.
A kill by sophomore
Dana Wisniewski and a Baptist Bible attack error gave the Blue and White a 17-14 lead they would not relinquish. A kill by senior
Meg Ryan eventually sealed the 25-23 opening set win.
The Cavaliers scored the first three points of the second set beforr Baptist Bible College responded with a runoff its own. Minutes later, the Blue and White found itself in a 7-4 hole. Each time Cabrini would cut the deficit to one point, the Defenders would make a big play to regain serve and stop Cabrini's momentum.
That all changed late in the set as a Ryan kill tied the score at 23, the first tie of the set. With junior
Kristy Riley at the service line, Cabrini secured its first lead of the set at 24-23. Baptist Bible rallied to tie the score at 24 but a Defender's attack error and kill by sophomore
Molly Fox secured the 26-24 set victory.
Cabrini carried its momentum from the second set into the third. The Cavaliers used a trio of service aces from Riley and junior
Michele Fitz to jump out to an 11-2 lead, forcing the Defenders to use both of their timeouts. Baptist Bible rallied to cut the lead to 12-10, but they would get no closer.
The Defenders would serve just four more times through the duration of the set as the Cavaliers regained control of the court, ultimately taking the third set 25-14.
Carrozza led the Blue and White with her third double-double of the season, with a season-high 16 kills and 19 digs. Fitz was strong on both sides of the new, recording nine kills and six total blocks.
Freshman Cassidy Keonig also recorded a double-double, her fourth of the season, posting 32 assists and 11 digs. Junior
Sophia Sokolovich added 14 digs for Cabrini.
