Women's Basketball Tops Gwynedd-Mercy for 7th Straight Win

Box Score

GWYNEDD, Pa. – The Cabrini College women's basketball team took sole possession of first place in the Colonial States Athletic Conference standings with tonight's 82-55 win at Gwynedd-Mercy College.  The win, the Blue and White's seventh in a row, improves the Cavaliers to 12-3 overall and 7-0 in the CSAC.

The Cavaliers had everything going tonight on both sides of the floor.  Defensively, Cabrini held the Griffins to under 40% shooting from the field and 1-14 from three point range.   The Blue and White also grabbed 50 rebounds, including 24 on the offensive glass, to Gwynedd-Mercy's 30.

Junior Brittany Sandone led the way with 20 points, a career high six assists and three steals.  Sophomore Amber Keys tallied 19 points and nine rebounds, while junior Annie Rivituso scored a career best 16 points in the win.

Cabrini got off to a hot start as an early Sandone three pointer gave the Blue and White a three point lead it would never relinquish.  The lead expanded to 27-17 when Sandone found Rivituso for a lay-up with just over nine minutes to play in the half. The Cavaliers continued to execute on both sides of the floor as five consecutive points by sophomore Megan Decker send the Blue and White to the locker room with a 47-27 lead after 20 minutes.

The Griffins came out of the break and immediately cut Cabrini's lead to 14 points.  Keys' offensive rebounds and put-back ended Gwynedd-Mercy's 6-0 run and opened a string of points on five consecutive Cabrini possessions to rebuild the lead to 56-35.  The Cavaliers' lead grew to a game high 29 points at 68-39 midway through the second stanza.

The Blue and White also recorded a season high 25 assists on its 31 made baskets, including five by Decker and three each by junior Colleen Stewart, Rivituso, Keys and freshman Dana Peterson.

Decker matched nine points and five boards with her five assists.  Stewart tied her career high with four steals to go with her four points, four rebounds, and three assists.

With 85 points in Saturday's win over Rosemont and 82 points tonight, the Cavaliers have reached the 80 point plateau in consecutive games for the first time since the 2000-01 season when Cabrini topped Immaculata 85-64 on December 4 and Neumann 82-61 on December 6.

Shae Wassel led the Griffins (10-6, 6-1 CSAC) with 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.  Natasha Matthews added 13 points and five rebounds.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Allentown, pa. to face Cedar Crest College.  Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
