ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Cabrini College women's basketball team used all 40 to secure its ninth consecutive win, as the Blue and White rallied to top Rosemont College 70-66. The victory keeps the Cavaliers unbeaten in the Colonial States Athletic Conference at 9-0 and improves them to 14-3 overall.
Junior
Brittany Sandone and sophomore
Amber Keys led the Cavaliers with 20 points each in the win. Sandone added three assist and four steals to her sixth 20 point performance of the season. Keys' 20 points matched a career high, which she paired with eight rebounds. Junior
Annie Rivituso added 10 points and eight boards in the win.
The Blue and White struggled to find its footing in the opening half, as Rosemont controlled the scoreboard through the first stanza. The Cavaliers fell behind early as Rosemont built an 18-8 lead just 6:30 into the game. A Sandone three pointer capped a 9-0 spurt, cutting Rosemont's lead to 18-17. The Ravens rebuilt their
lead to 37-27 before Cabrini closed the half with a 5-0 run.
The Cavaliers connected on just 12-33 from the floor and 5-14 from the free throw line in the game's first 20 minutes. Conversely, the Ravens hit 50% from the floor and 12-15 from the charity stripe to build a 39-32 lead at the break.
Rosemont's lead hovered between 6-10 points for the first 11 minutes of the second half and stood at 59-49 when the Blue and White began their comeback. A quick 6-0 run cut the deficit to 59-55 with 6:25 to play. After a Ravens jumper, Cabrini hit another 6-0 run, tying the score at 61 with 2:12 on the clock.
A Rosemont lay-up gave the Ravens a slim lead before Sandone again leveled the score with a lay-up of her own. Keys gave Cabrini its first lead of the game when her offensive rebound lead to a foul, after which the sophomore split a pair of free throws. Sandone's lay-up proved to be Cabrini's final field goal, as the Cavaliers won the game at the charity stripe, connecting on 7-8 in the game's final minute.
While both teams shot in the los 30's from the floor after the break, it was Cabrini's free throw shooting that allowed the Blue and White to outscore Rosemont 38-27 in the second half. The Cavaliers hit 11-13 from the line in the second half.
The Cavaliers have outrebounded every opponent this season, as tonight was no exception as the Blue and White secured 49 boards to Rosemont's 44. Junior
Colleen Stewart grabbed seven rebounds, while senior
Laura Caron secured six and freshman
Maura O'Connell five.
Sophomore Liz Coyne led the Ravens (10-7, 7-3 CSAC) with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Ashley Montecchio, the nation's leading scorer, matched Coyne's 11 rebounds and tallied 12 points.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Immaculata University. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The Blue and White posted a 73-52 home win over the Mighty Macs in early December.
