Women's Basketball Extends Streak to 10 in Win at Immaculata

Box Score

IMMACULATA, Pa. - Despite struggling offensively for much of the second half, the Cabrini College women's basketball team held on and won its 10th consecutive game and remained unbeaten in the Colonial States Athletic Conference after topping Immaculata University 57-46.  The victory improves the Cavaliers to 15-3 and 10-0 on the conference.

Junior Brittany Sandone led the charge with 19 points and six steals.  With 14 points, fellow junior Annie Rivituso has now scored double-figure points in nine of the last 10 games.  Sophomore Amber Keys added 10 points off the bench for the Blue and White.

The Cavaliers wasted little time jumping out to an early lead as they scored the game's first nine points.  The Mighty Macs fought back, scoring the next eight.  A Sandone three pointer capped a 13-4 spurt as Cabrini extended its lead to 22-12 with just over seven minutes until halftime.  Junior Colleen Stewart's lay-up closed the half, as the Blue and White carried a 31-17 lead into halftime.

A pair of Rivituso buckets extended Cabrini's advantage to 35-20 with just over 16 minutes to play before Immaculata began to mount its challenge.  The Mighty Macs used a 12-2 spurt to cut the Cavaliers' lead to 37-32 with 10:24 on the clock.  The Blue and White re-established its nine point lead at 43-34 before the Mighty Macs came back with another 10-2 run, slicing their deficit to 45-44 with 4:23 on the clock.

A Rivituso free throw followed by a Stewart steal and Sandone three pointer extended Cabrini's lead back to 49-44.  After senior Laura Caron split a pair at the free throw line, Immaculata's bucket cut the lead back to four points with 1:36 to play.  The Mighty Macs began sending the Cavaliers to the free throw line, where they iced the game going 7-8 from the charity stripe in the game's final 67 seconds.

The Cavaliers continued their tried and true philosophy of defense and rebounding in tonight's win.  Immaculata shot just 32.6% from the field, including 2-11 from the three point line.  Cabrini also won the rebounding battle 44-31, including 12 offensive boards that led to 10 points.

All nine players that saw action for the Blue and White recorded at least one rebound, led by Stewart and sophomore Megan Decker who shared game high honors with seven boards.  Rivituso and Keys grabbed six each, while Caron added five.

The Cavaliers also recorded 15 assists on their 19 field goals, led by Caron with four and Stewart and freshman Dana Peterson with three dimes each.

The Blue and White's 10 game win streak is its longest since the 1996-97 season when the Cavaliers won 13 consecutive games.  The program's longest win streak stands at 18 games during the 1995-96 campaign.

Cabrini will look to match the 2008-09 club with an 11-0 CSAC record when it takes the Nerney Field House floor on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.  The Blue and White will face Cairn University in the first half of Cabrini's Basketball Alumni Day doubleheader.

The Cavaliers' women's basketball will open the day at 11:00 a.m.  The men's alumni game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. following the Cabrini men's game against Keystone, which is slated for 4:00 p.m.
