Women's Basketball Stumbles in Opener

Box Score

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Cabrini women's basketball team dropped its season opener today, falling to Connecticut College 63-53 in the opening round of the Swarthmore College Tip-Off Tournament.

Junior Amber Keys led the Blue and White with 15 points and seven rebounds, connecting on seven of Cabrini's 16 field goals.  Fellow junior Megan Decker posted her first career double-double with 12 points and a game high 10 rebounds.

The Cavaliers fell behind early, as its offense struggled to get on track.  After hitting its second shot of the day, Cabrini went scoreless for just over three minutes, allowing the Camels to build an early seven point lead.  A Keys jumper eventually cut the Blue and White deficit to four points, a lead that Connecticut would carry into the half.

A pair of turnovers of Cabrini's opening two possessions of the second half allowed the Camels to build their lead to 35-27.  The Cavaliers continued to chip away at Connecticut's lead, keeping the deficit under five points.

With 5:34 to play, the Cavaliers finally eliminated the deficit, as a Keys' bucket gave Cabrini its first lead of the day at 46-45.  The lead, however was short lived, as the Camels took advantage of a pair of Cabrini fouls and connected on four consecutive free throws to rebuild a three point lead.

Cabrini got as close as 49-48 but the Camels converted on seven of its eight trips to the charity stripe down the stretch.

The Cavaliers shot just 30.2% from the field, including 1-8 from three point range.  The Blue and White also committed 20 turnovers in the opener.

Caitlin Cimino led the Camels (1-0) with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The Cavaliers will face Kean University on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the tournament's consolation game.  The Cougars suffered a 59-42 loss to Swarthmore in the day's first game.  Senior Simone Smith led the way with 12 points and grabbed eight boards.  Sophomore Jazmine Davis cleaned the glass to the tune of 22 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.
