Women's Basketball Rebounds for 74-63 Victory

Box Score

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Cabrini women's basketball team rebounded from a disappointing loss in the season opener to even its record at 1-1 with today's 74-63 win over Kean University in the consolation game at the Swarthmore College Tip-Off Tournament.

Senior Brittany Sandone led all scorers with a career high 27 points, including 12-13 from the free throw line.  The senior was named to the All-Tournament Team as her scoring output leaves her just four points shy of joining Cabrini's 1,000 point club.  Junior Amber Keys added 17 points and six boards in the win.  Both Cavaliers also posted three steals.

The Cavaliers got off to a good start as two of Sandone's three three pointers came in the game's opening three minutes and gave the Blue and White an early advantage.  The senior's deep shooting sent Cabrini to an 11-0 run that culminated with another triple from junior Decker, extending the lead to 16-6 at the 14:27 mark.

Kean continued to chip away at its deficit, cutting the lead to 17-16 midway through the half and regaining a one point advantage with 5:18 left in the opening half.  The lead lasted just one possession, as senor Annie Rivituso's lay-up returned the lead to Cabrini. The Cavaliers extended their lead back to 10 points in the final seconds of the half on a three pointer by sophomore Dana Peterson, but a Kean lay-up cut the lead to 36-28 at the break.

Sophomore Kristina Startare's jumper extended Cabrini's lead to 11 points with just over 15 minutes to play, but the Cavaliers couldn't pull away.  The Cougars again chipped away at the Blue and White lead.  With 8:41 on the clock, Kean regained a one point advantage, but Cabrini wasted little time in responding.

On the Cavaliers' next possession, Peterson grabbed a pair of offensive boards before finding Keys for a lay-up to give Cabrini a 55-54 lead with just under seven minutes to play, a lead the Blue and White would not relinquish.

Simone Smith led the Cougars (0-2) with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Jazmine Davis added 16 points and six boards before fouling out.

Cabrini will return to action on Tuesday as its crosses the street for the annual Battle for Eagle Road against Eastern University.  Game time is slated for 6:00 p.m. as the opening game of the much anticipated women's and men's doubleheader.

Tickets for Tuesday's tilt go on sale on Monday from 3-6:00 p.m. in Eastern's gym lobby.
