ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Cabrini women's soccer team claimed its third consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference championship, and sixth overall, with today's 4-3 victory at Rosemont College. With the victory, the Cavaliers improve to 12-3-5 on the season and punch its fifth ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
The match remained scoreless until the 23rd minute when a defensive miscue led to a Rosemont own goal. The Ravens evened the score in the 33rd minute on Stephanie Tamburro's first goal of the day. Despite outshooting Rosemont 8-1 in the opening 45 minutes of action, the Cavaliers could not find the back of the net during the first half.
Sophomore
Devon Miller gave Cabrini a 2-1 lead in the 53rd minute when she collected her own rebound and put the ball into the net for her first goal of the afternoon. Again, Rosemont had an answer in the 75th minute as Haley Hilpott found Jennifer South for the equalizer.
Miller again responded for the Blue and White, as the sophomore tallied her second goal of the game, an unassisted goal fired into the lower left corner of the goal. Just two minutes later, the Cavaliers increased their lead as sophomore Kaitlyn cooper found junior
Melissa Scanzano for the eventual game-winner.
Rosemont tightened the match in the 87th minute when Lauren Whalen found Tamburro for the rookie's second goal of the afternoon. The Raven's last ditch effort came with 25 seconds on the clock, but sailed wide.
The Cavaliers peppered the Rosemont goal to the tune of 26 shots, including 14 on target, while surrendering just six attempts for the Ravens. Miller led the way with six shots, while Scanzano fired five and sophomore
Julianna Ardire four.
Jenna Kaiser recorded 10 saves for the Ravens (12-8).
Miller earned the title game's Most Valuable Player honor with a pair of goals, bringing her team-leading total to nine goals on the season, including four in the CSAC Tournament.
Cabrini's victory makes the Cavaliers the first women's soccer program since the 1998-2000 Beaver College, now Arcadia University, women captured three consecutive CSAC/PAC titles. The win also breaks a tie with Misericordia who earned five league championships.
The Cavaliers must now wait until the NCAA Field Hockey Selection Shot to learn their tournament fate. The show is scheduled for broadcast on Monday at 1:30 p.m. on NCAA.com
