RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini College women's basketball team closed its regular season in emphatic fashion today as the Blue and White topped the visiting Marywood University Pacers 66-40 at Nerney Field House. The victory, Cabrini's 17th in a row, improved the Cavaliers to 22-3 on the season and a perfect 16-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
The 16-0 conference mark matches that of the 1996-97 Cabrini squad that finished 21-5 under head coach Dan Welde. The club ultimately fell in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal round to Allentown College. The 17 game win streak also marks the longest since the 1995-96 campaign when the Blue and White won 18 straight games.
The Cavaliers got a balanced scoring effort today with four players scoring at least nine points and four players with at least four rebounds. Junior
Annie Rivituso led the club with her second double-double of the year, pairing a career high 18 points with 12 rebounds. Fellow junior
Brittany Sandone added 13 points and four steals, while sophomore
Amber Keys nearly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine boards.
The Pacers grabbed an early lead but a Sandone three gave the Cavaliers a 5-4 lead, they would not relinquish. Cabrini used a series of quick runs to continue building its lead but an 8-0 late in the half extended the Blue and White advantage to 35-19 with 3:16 to play until the half.
After 20 minutes, the Cavaliers held a 35-21 lead. Cabrini held Marywood to just 7-29 first half shooting and forced 17 turnovers. Conversely, the Blue and White connected on over 41% from the floor and dominated the glass 22-15, including nine on the offensive glass.
The Blue and White turned up the defensive pressure from the opening buzzer of the second half. The Cavaliers held Marywood scoreless for the first five minutes of the second stanza, extending the lead to 47-21. The Pacers got as close as 18 points but Cabrini responded with a 11-2 spurt, extending the lead to 58-31 with just north of six minutes to play.
The Cavaliers forced a season high 30 turnovers and allowed the Pacers to connect on just 15-56 from the floor. The Blue and White's rebounding dominance continued through the entire 40 minutes as the Cavaliers outrebounded Marywood 49-31, including 20 offensive boards.
Cabrini senior
Laura Caron posted nine points, four rebounds and three assists in her final regular season game. Sophomore
Megan Decker again displayed her all-around game, recording a line of seven points, six rebounds, three assists and seven steals. Junior
Colleen Stewart added five points and five boards in the win.
Sophomores Morgann Haduck and Lindsey Schroth and freshman Alexa Gerchman led the Pacers (14-11, 11-5 CSAC) with six points each.
By virtue of having the best conference in the regular season, the Cavaliers secured a bye into Wednesday's CSAC Tournament semifinal round. The Cavaliers must wait until Monday night to learn their semifinal opponent. The 7:00 p.m. semifinal will feature the Cavaliers against the lowest remaining seed after Monday's quarterfinal games. Monday's contests feature #6 Keystone at #3 Rosemont and #5 Marywood at #4 Neumann.
