RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini College women's basketball team extended its win streak to 15 games with tonight's 79-55 win over Gwynedd-Mercy at Nerney Field House. The victory improved the Blue and White to 20-3 overall and a perfect 14-0 on the Colonial States Athletic Conference, marking the first time since the 2008-09 campaign that the Blue and White has reached the 20 win mark and the first time for fourth year head coach
Kate Pearson.
In addition to beating the Griffins twice in the regular season for the first time since the 1996-97 season, the win also secured the top spot in the upcoming CSAC tournament.
Junior
Brittany Sandone led a balanced Cavalier attack with 18 points, including 3-5 from three point range. Fellow junior
Annie Rivituso added 15 points and six
rebounds. Junior
Colleen Stewart posted 13 points, including her first career three pointer, and a career high three blocked shots in the win.
The Cavaliers got off to a great start as Sandone opened the game with a three pointer, sending Cabrini on an 8-0 run to open the action. The Griffins scored the next five points and remained within striking distance until midway through the first half when an 11-2 run extended Cabrini's lead to 26-14. Minutes later, a Sandone steal and three point play ran the lead to 17 points.
After 20 minutes of play, the Cavaliers went to the locker room with a 43-30 advantage. The Blue and White connected on 15-30, including 4-5 from three point range, from the floor, with all five starters scoring at least six first half points. Cabrini dominated the defensive end of the floor as well, holding Gwynedd-Mercy to just 8-27 field goals and forcing 14 first half turnovers.
Cabrini didn't allow the Griffins any opportunities to recover after the break, as they never got within 13 points. A Rivituso jumper in the paint gave the Blue and White a 59-39 lead midway through the second half. The lead grew as large as 77-50 with just under two minutes to play on a lay-up by senior
Melissa Kudzmas.
While the Griffins connected on 40% from the floor after the break, they managed just 25 points to the Cavaliers' 36. The Blue and White also dominated the glass, outrebounding Gwynedd-Mercy 22-12 after the break and holding the Griffins without a single offensive board in the second half.
Sophomore
Megan Decker recorded a solid all-around game with nine points, six rebounds, five assists and matching a career high with seven steals, five coming before the half. Senior
Laura Caron added seven points and seven boards in the win.
Junior Nicole Dougherty led the Griffins (14-8-10-3 CSAC) with 15 points and six rebounds. Fellow junior Jordan Dominic added 12 points and three steals.
By virtue of securing the top seed in the upcoming CSAC Tournament, the Cavaliers will get a bye through the first round and host a semifinal game on Wednesday, February 20. The confernece championship game is scheduled for Saturday, February 23.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday when they host Marywood University (13-10, 10-4 CSAC) as the opener of a CSAC doubleheader. Game time is slated for 1;00 p.m., before Cabrini's men face Rosemont College.
The game is also designated as Cabrini's Play 4Kay game. The Blue and White will join hundreds of teams across the country in donning pink to raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.
