RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini women's soccer team battled Widener University to a 1-1 draw tonight at Edith Rob Dixon Field in the season opener for both clubs.
After struggling to find its flow in the game's early minutes, the Cavaliers began to push the place of play. The renewed effort paid off in the 40th minute when freshman Jessica Breuning found sophomore Meghan Martin near the touch line. Martin slotted the ball in the back of the net for her second career goal.
The Blue and White carried the 1-0 advantage until the 66th minute when the Pride converted a direct kick. Despite outshooting Widener 5-3 and recording four corner kicks after the halftime break, Cabrini couldn't regain the lead.
Both teams managed solid chances during the overtime periods, but both defenses held strong, maintaining the 1-1 draw.
Cabrini outshot Widener 11-6, led by Breuning's three shots. Martin, fellow sophomore Dana Peterson and freshman Allie Vallen added two shots each.
Freshman goaltender Marissa Jenkins recorded one save in her first collegiate action.
The Cavaliers return to action on Wednesday when they host DeSales University. The action is scheduled to get underway at Edith Robb Dixon Field at 4:00 p.m.
