RADNOR, Pa. – For the sixth consecutive season, the Cabrini volleyball team recorded a win in its Colonial States Athletic Conference opener. The Cavaliers claimed a 3-0 win over Gwynedd Mercy University tonight at Nerney Field House. The 25-5, 25-11, 25-14 victory improved the Blue and White to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
The Cavaliers took control of the match in the early going, as sophomore setter
Cassidy Koenig served the Blue and White to nine consecutive points and a commanding 14-3 lead. Following a Griffins' service error, senior
Danielle Carrozza led the club to five straight points, including two service aces. Fellow senior
Sophia Sokolovich served the club to the final five points of the set.
The Blue and White continued its runs into the second set. Four straight points on serves by senior
Michele Fitz gave Cabrini an early lead, but Sokolovich's five service points took the Cavaliers from a 15-8 lead to 20-8, en route to a 25-11 set win.
While head coach
Eric Schaefer made some line-up changes for the final set, the effort and result remained the same. Junior
Dana Wisniewski was key to Cabrini's 25-14 third set victory. The junior recorded four service aces, as she served Cabrini to eight consecutive points and a 12-2 lead.
Sophomore
Jen Grenauer led the Cavaliers with nine kills on 10 attempts. Freshman
Kelly Guarino added six kills and a match high six digs, while Carrozza posted five kills. Koenig finished with 28 of the Blue and White's 29 assists on the night.
Senior Michelle Carrieri led the Griffins (1-8, 0-1 CSAC) with four kills.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday as they visit Lancaster, Pa. for the Franklin & Marshall Scramble. Cabrini will face Susquehanna (8-1) at 10:00 a.m., Franklin & Marshall (8-0) at 12:00 Noon and College of Mt. St. Vincent (0-4) at 2:00 p.m.
