CSAC Nominates Megan Decker as NCAA Woman of the Year

ASTON, Pa. – Cabrini women's basketball and women's lacrosse senior student-athlete Megan Decker, has been named as one of two student-athletes selected as the Colonial States Athletic Conference's nominees for the 2015 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, as voted on by the conference's athletic directors. Marylu Ortiz from Notre Dame of Maryland University was also selected.

The NCAA Woman of the Year Award honors graduating student-athletes for their collegiate achievements not only athletically, but also in service, leadership and academics.

Decker, who was named the 2015 CSAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, recently graduated Summa Cum Laude from Cabrini with a degree in elementary and special education.  At Commencement, Decker received the Mother Ursula Award, which is given to a senior who, "in the opinion of his/her classmates, has best fulfilled the ideals of the College through academic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities, leadership and service to fellow classmates and Cabrini College."

Decker has earned numerous other academic honors throughout her career, including CSAC All-Academic Team, Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area, Dean's List and President's List. She was also honored as a 2014-15 Pierce Scholar, earned an English Department Academic Award and was inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society.

On the court, Decker helped lead the Cavaliers to three CSAC women's basketball championships and the team's first-ever NCAA tournament victory over Moravian College in 2014. As a junior, she earned All-CSAC Honorable Mention All-CSAC, before capping her basketball career with a spot on the All-CSAC First Team in 2015.

In 100 career games, Decker made 88 starts and averaged 8.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game. She leaves Cabrini ranked seventh all-time in rebounds, ninth all-time in blocks and fourth all-time in steals.

Decker also earned three letters as a defender in lacrosse for Cabrini, helping to lead the Blue and White to three consecutive CSAC crowns. She appeared in 47 games and recorded 69 caused turnovers, collected 98 ground balls and contributed one goal and one assist.

She is a two-time All-CSAC Honorable Mention honoree and was part of the Cavalier squad that defeated Arcadia University in the 2014 NCAA tournament, the program's second NCAA Tournament victory.

A three-year member of Cabrini's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Decker served as a Cabrini Student Ambassador, President of Cabrini's Association of the Education of Young Children, the Treasurer for the Pa. State Education Association and has participated in Special Olympics, LEADStrong, Athletes Helping Athletes and the Council for Exceptional Children.

A record 147 NCAA female-student-athletes have been named 2015 Woman of the Year honorees by conferences and independent schools.

These honorees, selected from the record 480 school nominees, represent college athletes from 18 different sports spanning all three NCAA divisions. Of those recognized, 57 honorees competed in Division I, 39 competed in Division II and 51 competed in Division III.

Nominees from conferences across the country are forwarded to the NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee. In early September, this committee will choose the top 10 honorees in each division. From those 30 candidates, the selection committee will determine the top three in each division.

The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will vote from amongst those nine finalists to determine the 2015 Woman of the Year.  The top 30 honorees will be honored and the 2015 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named at the annual ceremony in Indianapolis on Oct. 18.
