What's at Stake
Saturday's winner will advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament where they will face the winner of No. 20 Lynchburg College vs. McDaniel College. The second round matchup will be played on Sunday at 7pm. Second-round winners will advance to one of four sectional sites on November 17 and 18 or 18 and 19. All games, except the semifinals and final, will be played on the campuses of competing institutions.

Saturday's first round matchup will mark the first time since 2015 and the eighth time overall that the Cavaliers will compete in the NCAA women's soccer tournament. Their 2015 NCAA tournament matchup featured a 5-0 loss at the hands of then No. 5 Carnegie Mellon University.

The No. 7 Christopher Newport Captains boast one of only five unbeaten records in the nation and won its second straight Capital Athletic Conference Championship (CAC) to secure its' spot in the NCAA Tournament. It will be the 10th all-time appearance for the Captains and the fourth time out of the last five years. The Captains advanced to last years NCAA Second Round after a 3-2 victory over No. 19 Rowan, but fell 4-0 to No. 12 Johns Hopkins in the second round.

How They Got Here: Second half surge powers Cavs to NCAA Tournament
The Blue and White started off the 2017 season with just two victories in their first six matches as they played to three ties and were beat 6-0 by eventual Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth champion Arcadia University.

Led by senior Taylor Tralie, the Cavs then reeled off six straight wins to improve their record to 8-1-3 overall and 6-0-2 in the CSAC. Tralie racked up 13 points off of four goals and five assists, while the team outscored their opponents 15-2 over the six game span.

An abrupt 3-0 loss to the streaking Centenary Cyclones preceded a hard fought 1-1 tie with the visiting Washington College Shorewomen with just two games to go in the regular season.

Matchups with Clarks Summit and Rosemont, however allowed the Cavs' offense to get back on track as they outscored the Defenders and Raves by a combined 9-2 margin, while also holding a decisive 43-20 advantage in shots.

Cabrini headed into the CSAC tournament as the No. 3 seed, knowing a championship and NCAA berth was within reach, but would not come easy as they would need to reel off three wins over the top teams in the conference.

Cabrini's offense, powered by Tralie's two goals and two assists, proved to be too much for the visiting Mighty Macs in the opening round. The Blue and White would have a shot at revenge in the semifinal as they headed to Centenary just two weeks after being served a 3-0 loss.

In a game that featured just six total shots on goal between both teams, the Cavs left Hackettstown, NJ with a sweet 2-1 victory and more importantly a chance at the conference title.

The Marywood Pacers and their potent offense welcomed the Cavaliers to Scranton, PA for the CSAC final just three days later. Led by sophomore 2017 CSAC Player of the Year Renae Moken, the Pacers boasted an offense that scored north of four goals per game as well as a defense that featured the 2017 CSAC Rookie of the Year in Molly Sobolewski.

Unfazed and unbothered, Cabrini handed the No. 1 seeded Pacers their first loss in over a month to capture their first CSAC championship since 2015 and secure the team's eighth trip to the NCAA Tournament.

How They Got Here: Record setting season paves way for Captains
To say Christopher Newport is enjoying their best season in program history may still be underselling it a bit. The Captains have reached their highest national ranking ever this season as they ended the year ranked No. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) Top-25, they have set a new program record of 18 wins in a season, including a 16 game winning streak, and have won their second consecutive Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) title and fourth in the last five years.

The only game CNU didn't win came early in just their third game of the season against Virginia Wesleyan, which resulted in a 2-2 tie. The two goals allowed are tied for the most the Captains defense has allowed all season, which happened just one other time. In fact, opponents have combined to score a paltry 10 goals against CNU on the season.

During their 16 game win streak the Captains out scored their opponents 61-7 and have allowed just one goal in their last eight games.

Dominant wins in the CAC Tournament over St. Mary's (3-0) and Frostburg State (4-0) catapulted the Captains into the NCAA tournament.

Cabrini Last Time Out: Cavs upend top seeded Pacers 2-1 in CSAC Final (11/4/17)
The Cabrini women's soccer team capped their season in style as they claimed their 10th CSAC championship with a 2-1 victory over the host Marywood Pacers.

Senior Gabby LeGendre and the Cavalier defense was outstanding as they held the Pacers' high scoring offense to just one goal; a far cry from their season average of 4.1 goals per game. LeGendre, who took home game MVP honors, was particularly dominant as she racked up nine saves on the day.

The Pacers opened up the scoring in the 13th minute as CSAC Player of the Year Renae Moken served a ball from midfield down the right side to junior Megan Swiecicki who was able to push it past LeGendre for the early lead.

The Blue and White would answer just 10 minutes later, however as senior Marisa Christensen found classmate Kelsee Tironi off a free kick who was able to find pay dirt to even things at one a piece. Both teams combined for just four more shots in the half as the 1-1 score held steady into the intermission.

Marywood came out of the break with an aggressive attack as they registered four shots in the first nine minutes of action. Back-to-back shots from Tralie in the 56th minute, however swung momentum back in favor of the Cavs. A shot from Tironi just minutes later set up a corner for the Blue and White where Tralie would find freshman Rachel Wood. Wood's shot from 17 yards out was true as it splashed the back of the net and would stand to be the game winner for the Cavs.

Christopher Newport Last Time Out: Big second half fuels Captains CAC Championship (11/4/17)
The Captains' victory was never in doubt in the conference title game, as the league's leading offense and defense continued it's exceptional performance this season en route to setting a new program record for wins in a season.

CNU outshot Frostburg State 35-3 and the defense allowed only two shots on-goal. The back line, led by senior Danielle Pratt with sophomores Shave Doherty, Keiley McCArthy, and rookie Alexi Manley managed to keep Frostburg State out of their attacking zone for the majority of the contest.

On the offensive end, it was another scorching performance from the Captains attacking players, who have now scored multiple goals in nine of the last ten games. Despite taking 20 shots in the first half, including 10 on-frame, the Captains would only lead 1-0 at the break courtesy of a late goal from senior Alex Miller.

The CNU offense came out firing in the second half and quickly turned the close game into a blowout. First, just under seven minutes into the second half the Captains junior leader, Gabby Gillis, put away a fantastic goal from outside the box.

The Captains then added two goals in a span of three minutes to ice the game and cruise to the comfortable 4-0 victory.
