Junior
Meghan Matthews tallied a season and game high 24 points and 14 rebounds, highlighted by 10 points and eight boards in the second half. Sophomore
Kate Lannon was right behind Matthews as the rookie knocked down 7-of-15 shots for 21 points in just 22 minutes of action. Senior
Nomi Washington narrowly missed a double-double as she collected nine points and nine rebounds, while junior
Cassidy Gallagher added eight points, five assists and two steals.
The Blue and White jumped out to a 16-9 lead after the first quarter thanks to swarming defense that caused the Blue Jays to shoot just 3-of-13 (23.1%) from the field in the opening 10 minutes of action. Lannon proved to have the hot hand early as she accounted for half of the Cavs' 16 first quarter points.
E-Town managed to flip the scrip on the Blue and White in the second quarter as they opened with an 11-to-3 run to take the 20-19 lead just over three minutes into the action. The Cavs would respond and put an end to the E-Town run, but neither team was able to extend their lead more than two points before the end of the quarter. Lannon provided a bit of fireworks just before halftime as she nailed a deep three as time expired to give the Cavs the 31-29 lead.
The Blue Jays came out of the break hot as they ripped off a 14-to-6 run to take a 43-35 lead with six minutes left in the quarter. Matthews and the Cavs managed to cut the Blue Jay lead to just five after an easy lay in, but E-Town stayed hot as they added a 9-to-4 run to end the half with a 54-45 lead.
The Blue and White refused to go down without a fight as they responded with a momentum swinging 14-to-6 run to pull to within a point. After keeping pace primarily at the charity stripe for the next three minutes,
Sabrina Hackendorn knocked down a jumper in the lane to even things at 63 apiece with 44 seconds to go. A pair of free throws from E-Town senior Emma Hoesman briefly put the Blue Jays up two, but a game tying layup from Matthews with 30 seconds left sent the two teams into overtime knotted at 65.
A 6-2 run in favor of the Blue Jays put them up 71-67 early in overtime, but a pair of freebies from sophomore
Kate King cut the E-Town lead back to two with just under three minutes left. After both teams swapped baskets, Matthews took the game over as she netted her team's final six points coming off of a smooth lay-in as well as knocking down 5-6 from the charity stripe to give the Cavs the hard fought 78-77 victory.
Cabrini Last Time Out: Cabrini 66, Gwynedd Mercy 65 (12/1/18, Gwynedd Valley, PA)
Senior
Nomi Washington continued her hot play for the Blue and White as she netted a game high 19 points on 8-of-16 from the field, while also adding six steals and four rebounds. Sophomore
Kate Lannon was the only other Cavalier in double figures as she finished with 13 points, as well as five steals of her own. In total, the Cavs forced 25 turnovers, with 17 of them being steals.
Following a first half that saw the Griffins claim a 34-28 lead, the Blue and White turned up the defensive pressure on the Griffins to open the second stanza. After a jumper and a triple from Washington and Lannon, respectively, to cut the Griffins lead to 34-33, the Cavaliers forced a pair of key turnovers to help keep the Gwyneed Mercy offense at bay.
As they've shown in years past, however, the Griffins quickly regained their offensive rhythm to the tune of a 15-to-7 run to push their lead to nine points with just over 5:30 left in the game.
With their backs against the wall, the Cavalier offense answered with a huge 17-to-6 run over the next four minutes to steal the lead at 63-61. A key triple from freshman
Dani Tyrell with 50 seconds to play put an exclamation point on the Cavs' run as it swung the lead in their favor.
The Griffins would answer with a three pointer of their own on the ensuing possession to retake the lead at 64-63, but a layup from Lannon with 20 seconds to go put the Cavs back up by one.
After junior
Cassidy Gallagher hit the back end of a pair of free throw attempts with seven seconds to play to make it a 66-64 game, the Griffins would have one final chance to tie with a trip to the charity stripe and five seconds on the clock.
After sinking the first one, the Griffins Monet McGorda's second shot missed the mark and secured the Cavaliers thrilling Atlantic East victory.
Elizabethtown Last Time Out: Elizabethtown 92, Moravian 93 (12/1/18, Bethelhem, PA)
Elizabethtown got off to a cold start shooting, connecting on 4 of 18 shots in the opening quarter. Veronica Christ and Roni Isenberg combined for nine of the Jays' 13 points. They trailed 18-13 going into the second.
The tables turned in terms of field goal percentage with E-town shooting 50 percent in the second quarter. Though the Greyhounds were just 5-for-15 from the field, they made up for a lack of field goals by hitting eight of their ten foul shots in the period and were 12-for-16 in the first half.
Each team shot 50 percent or better in the fourth quarter. Elizabethtown hit 14 shots from the floor while Moravian made 10. The Jays also had a plus-six advantage in threes, but where Moravian thrived was at the charity stripe. The Greyhounds took 18 free throws in the fourth and hit 15 of the them.
Moravian led by eight multiple times throughout the final frame, but E-town continued to battle back, until a foul in the final two seconds put Moravian back at the line for two, essentially icing the game.
