RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini volleyball team opened its 2019 campaign in familiar territory, as it played host to Mt. Aloysious College, Swarthmore College, Ursinus College and Washington & Jefferson College for the Cavalier Clash at Nernrey Field House.
The Cavaliers split its two matches on the day's slate, topping Ursinus 3-1 before suffering a 3-1 loss to Swarthmore.
Junior
Steph Judkins and senior
Katrina Shelly paced the Blue and White in the opener, as both notched double-doubles in the 24-26, 25-20, 25-17, 25-16 victory. Judkins tallied 23 kills and 11 digs, while Shelly added 12 kills and 12 digs.
Sophomore
Amelia Ballard fell just shy of a double-dip, pairing 28 assists and nine digs. Sophomore
Gina Custer tallied a team-high 28 digs, while freshman
Melanie Cotes-Rivera posted 16 assists in her collegiate debut.
The Cavaliers were strong at the service line, recording 11 service assists, including four each by Ballard and Shelly. The club was just as impressive with its defensive presence at the net, combining for 18 block assists in the victory. Shelly joined freshman
Victoria Camacho with five block assists each, with Shelly recording Cabrini's lone solo block.
Cabrini could not carry its winning momentum into the nightcap, falling to the Garnet 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-15.
Again, it was Judkins and Shelly leading the way, as both scored their second double-doubles of the day. Judkins matched her earlier performance with 23 kills to go with 14 digs, while Shelly tallied 10 kills and a career high 19 digs.
Custer scored a team-high 20 digs, while Cotes-Rivera paired 23 assists and six digs. Ballard chipped in with 17 dimes and seven digs. Sophomores
Hannah Dalton and
Marie Hamilton added three block assists each and combined for nine kills.
In today's other action, Mt. Aloysious scored a 3-1 (25-13, 17-25, 25-22, 25-15) win over Ursinus, as six Mounties tallied at least four kills each. Junior Machala Gibbons led the way with 13 kills and 10 digs and joined classmate Macy King with four service aces.
In the night's final match, Washington & Jefferson rallied for a 29-31, 25-16, 25-8, 25-15) win over Mt. Aloysious. Senior Morgan Jacques and junior Haley Nelson combined for 22 kills and 10 block assists, while senior Mallory O'Brien paired 28 assists and 11 digs in the victory.
The Cavalier Clash will conclude with three matches on Saturday at Nerney Field House. The Mounties will face Swarthmore at 11am, with the Blue and White hosting Washington & Jefferson at 1pm. W&J and Swarthmore will match wits at 3pm in the final match of the weekend.
