HAVERFORD, PA – The Cabrini volleyball team split a pair of matches today at the Haverford College Ford Invitational. The Cavaliers cruised to a 3-0 victory over St. Mary's College (MD) (2-4) before falling just short in a thrilling five setter against the host Fords.
The duo of junior
Steph Judkins and senior
Katrina Shelly paced the Blue and White offense in the opener. Judkins scored 15 kills and three service aces, while Shelly paired 10 kills and 10 digs.
Cabrini's setting dup pf sophomore
Amelia Ballard and freshman
Melanie Cotes-Rivera combined for 28 assists and seven service aces, while sophomore
Gina Custer paired 20 digs and a career best six aces.
The Cavaliers erased several big deficits in the nightcap before falling 25-19, 25-27, 25-23, 25-22, 15-13 to Haverford (6-0).
The back and forth match culminated with an exciting fifth set. The Fords came out on fire, scoring the first five points of the seceding frame. Trailing 11-4, it seemed as though the Cavaliers had run out of steam, but a furious rally was about to begin.
Consecutive double blocks by sophomores
Hannah Dalton and
Marie Hamilton gave the Blue and White some short-lived momentum, but two Haverford points pushed the score to 13-7.
Minutes later, back to back Judkins kills cut the deficit to 13-11 and forced a Haverford timeout. The Fords responded with a point to force match point, but Judkins again had an answer. The junior responded with two more kills, pulling Cabrini to within 14-13, but a service error, the Cavaliers' 11th of the match, ended the festivities.
Judkins paced the Blue and White with a match-high 21 kills and 15 digs, while Ballard and Cotes-Rivera matched Judkins with double-doubles. Ballard notched 24 assists and 16 digs to go with four service aces, while Cotes-Rivera added 18 assists and 13 digs.
Shelly narrowly missed a double-dip, pairing 16 kills and nine digs. Custer earned team-high honors with 29 digs, while Dalton and Hamilton combined for 11 of Cabrini's 14 block assists.
The Cavaliers will close their weekend schedule on Saturday, when they face Hunter College (1-1) at 10am.
