ASTON, Pa. – The third-seeded Cabrini volleyball team landed on the wrong side of 3-1 decision Saturday against top-seeded Neumann College in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) title match. Junior Lizzie Williams posted her seventh double-double of the season with 40 assists and 10 digs in the loss.
The Knights advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season after winning three sets by a combined seven points. The closely contested match featured four sets decided by no more than three points.
Freshman Alexis Doss, the CSAC Rookie of the Year, led the Cabrini attack with 16 kills on 37 attempts, yielding a team-best .378 attack clip. Senior Lindsay Martin and junior Traci Beltz each buried 10 kills.
Sophomore Stephanie Recklau notched six kills and four total blocks, including three block assists.
Defensively, senior Michelle Mola guided the Cavaliers with a team-high 20 digs. Senior Danielle Finnegan added 15 digs.
Martin paired her 10 kills with 13 digs, registering her first double-double of the season.
Similar to the two teams' first meeting, a 3-2 win in favor of the Knights, Neumann jumped to a 2-0 match lead after narrow wins of 25-22 and 25-23 in the opening sets.
Cabrini trimmed the Knights' advantage to 2-1 after a gutty 25-23 win in the third set. Doss led the charge in game three, tallying six kills on 10 attempts with zero errors. Williams served 12 helpers and paired two digs with two kills.
The Cavaliers' offense recorded a match-high 14 kills and .324 hitting percentage in the third set.
However, Neumann closed out the match with a dramatic 25-23 triumph in the fourth set. Cabrini roared back from a 13-9 deficit, thrice tying the score down the stretch. Following a kill from Martin to even the count at 23-23, the Knights put away the contest with back-to-back points.
Second-year head coach Eric Schaefer and the Cavaliers wrap up play against CSAC opponents in 2008 with a program-record 20 overall wins.
