SCRANTON, Pa. – The Cabrini field hockey team opened the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) portion of its 2008 season Wednesday, topping Marywood University, 2-1. Junior forward Desiree Umosella tallied two goals for the Cavaliers in the win.
The Cabrini offense was relentless throughout, registering 29 total shots, including 17 in the opening half. Senior Melissa Benedetti led the barrage, recording a team-best nine shots.
However, the Cavaliers' offense found itself in a one-goal deficit for the second game in two outings. The host Pacers grabbed a 1-0 advantage at the 24:56 mark of the first half. Off a feed from Caity Hadzimichalis, Emily Wentzel handed the hosts a one-goal lead mid-way through the period.
Cabrini responded, tying the contest with less than three minutes before the intermission. Umosella's first goal of the game in the 32nd minute evened the scoring at one goal apiece. Junior Lynda Kaufmann was credited with the assist.
Less than four minutes into the second half, the same junior connection provided the Cavaliers a one-goal and cushion and the decisive marker. Umosella's fourth goal of the season at the 38:24 mark resulted in a 2-1 advantage, a lead never again threatened.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Donahue continues her stellar play in cage for the Cavaliers. She reached the 10-save plateau for the sixth time this season, stopping 11 Marywood shots in the win.
The Cavaliers owned a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Umosella registered seven shots for the game, all of which were on Lancers goalkeeper Jennifer Miller. She claimed 20 saves in the setback.
Cabrini (5-4, 1-0) continues CSAC play Saturday, September 27 at local-opponent Rosemont College. Game time is scheduled at 1 p.m.
