RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini field hockey team concluded its regular season schedule Thursday afternoon, dropping a 2-1 decision versus non-conference opponent Alvernia University. Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Donahue tallied 15 saves for the Cavaliers in the loss.
Freshman Lauren Guido's goal with less than four minutes remaining proved to be the game-winning tally for the Crusaders. Sophomore Samantha Landis was credited with the assist.
Cabrini got on the scoreboard first when freshman forward Lindsey Atzert deposited her fourth goal of the season, an unassisted tally, with less than four minutes after the opening whistle. Atzert gathered a loose ball by the left post and beat Alvernia sophomore goalkeeper Abby Eby to the opposite corner.
Despite losing the shots battle, at halftime, 11-5, the Cavaliers owned a 1-0 advantage at the intermission. The Crusaders out-shot the Blue & White for the contest, 22-11.
Alvernia evened the scoring, 1-1, in the 38th minute after freshman Amanda Peto tipped-in a pass from sophomore Katy Eby on the Cavaliers' doorstep.
The ensuing 29 minutes played scoreless until Guido scored the decisive goal. Landis' pass to the Cabrini cage was one-timed by Guido to the far post.
Eby made eight saves for the Crusaders in the victory. Alvernia also recorded a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners.
The contest also marked the final regular season home games for Cavalier seniors Bridget Bergen and Lynda Kaufmann. Each have been critical pieces to the Blue & White's success in 2009 and prior. This season, Bergen has posted four point on two goals and Kaufmann leads the team with four defensive saves, including one against the Crusaders.
Cabrini (8-10, 6-2) earned the No. 4 seed for the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament and will host No. 5 seed Marywood University Saturday, October 31 at 3 p.m. The Cavaliers and Pacers met once during the regular season as the Blue & emerged with a 4-1 victory.
