RADNOR, Pa. – The No. 15 Cabrini men's lacrosse team captured its fifth consecutive win Saturday, downing local rival Widener University, 15-11, at Edith Robb Dixon Field. Junior attackman Casey Grugan powered the Cavaliers with a game-high five points.
Grugan extended his consecutive points streak to 50 games, scoring two goals and adding three assists against the Pride. He moves into a tie for eighth-place all-time on Cabrini's single-season points chart with 66, matching former Cavalier Mike Pape's (1999-2002) performance in 2001.
Senior midfielder B.J. Kletcheck, sophomore midfielder Dan Terenick and freshman attackman Brian Hill each contributed a season-high four points. Kletcheck and Terenick each buried three goals and dished one assist. Hill paired two scores with two assists.
Senior attackman Scott Reimer posted two points on two goals. Reimer, the program's all-time leader in career goals, is one marker shy of becoming the first Cavalier all-time to reach the 200-goal plateau.
Junior attackman Steve Kapp and sophomore midfielder Paul Skulski notched two points, each scoring one goal and handing out one assist.
Widener became just the third team this season to win more face-offs than Cabrini, claiming 15 victories at the X against 13 from the Cavaliers. Senior Mike Dolente went 9-for-20 in the face-off circle, while classmate Kevin Fahey won 4-of-8 tries.
Senior goalkeeper Kevin Chenoweth ran all 60 minutes for the Blue & White in the cage, earning his ninth win of the season with 14 saves. Chenoweth tallied 10 saves in the second half.
The Cavaliers sprinted to a 4-0 lead just over three minutes into the first quarter. Terenick deposited Cabrini's first goal of the game at the 13:57 mark before assisting on the second from Hill just 24 seconds following.
Widener trimmed its deficit in half with consecutive scores mid-way through the opening period. Grugan (1:19) and Terenick (0:23) pushed the Cavaliers' advantage back to four goals, 6-2, to close out the quarter.
Each team found the back of the cage twice in the second stanza as the Blue & White owned an 8-4 edge at the intermission. Grugan had a hand in both tallies, assisting the first to Skulski before burying the second off a feed from Kapp.
After the Cavaliers' lead ballooned to a then game-high five goals, 11-6, at the 6:09 mark of the third period, Widener responded with two unanswered markers from sophomore Andrew Janusz and freshman Johnny Casey to pull within two goals heading into the fourth quarter.
However, Cabrini halted the Pride rally with four of the fourth quarter's first five goals. In each of the last three seasons, this local rivalry had been decided by just one goal. But Terenick's third and final score of the game increased the Cavaliers' advantage to a game-best six goals, 15-9, with 4:13 remaining.
Casey, Janusz and senior Justin Upp each recorded three points for the Pride in the loss. Face-off specialist Nick Fluharty won 15-of-27 attempts in the draw circle.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Carney totaled nine saves.
Saturday's win was the Cavaliers' third in the last four seasons against Widener. The 2006 and 2007 contests resulted in a combined five overtimes with each team earning a win. The victory also improves the Blue & White's all-time record at Edith Robb Dixon Field to 22-4.
Cabrini (9-3, 3-0), owner of the nation's longest active conference win streak at 83 games, returns to its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) schedule Saturday, April 18 at Shenandoah University. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
