Volleyball Sweeps Bryn Mawr College in First Match, 3-0

Senior setter Lizzie Williams totaled 18 assists Tuesday and is just five shy of the 2000th for her Cabrini career.

The Cabrini volleyball team started the 2009 season off on the right foot, sweeping Bryn Mawr College, 3-0, at Nerney Field House Tuesday night. Senior setter Lizzie Williams notched a double-double, totaling a team-high 18 assists and 10 digs.

Williams entered the contest just 23 assists shy of the 2000th for her career at Cabrini. She heads to the weekend tournament at Moravian College only five assists short of the milestone.

Senior Traci Beltz and sophomore libero Courtney Abel bolstered the Cabrini backline with Williams, each recording a club-best 11 digs. Beltz contributed six service aces.

Offensively, sophomore Alexis Doss powered the Cavaliers at the net, tallying a team-high eight kills. Junior Stephanie Recklau posted six kills on 12 attempts.

Cabrini jumped out to a one-game advantage following a convincing 25-13 win in the first set. Doss and Recklau charged the victory with three kills each. Williams chipped in with four assists and three digs.

The Cavaliers put the Owls in a 2-0 hole with a 25-16 victory in game two. Beltz, Doss, sophomore Beth Gillespie and freshman Meg Ryan combined to record nine kills for the Blue & White.

Cabrini closed out the match with a 25-22 triumph in the third set. Doss and Ryan each totaled three kills as Williams served eight assists in the winning effort.

Sophomore Mikecia Witherspoon led the Bryn Mawr effort, posting a match-high 13 kills. Sophomore Emily Takeuchi-Miller tallied 10 assists, while senior Katie Solook added 15 digs.

Cabrini (1-0) begins the Moravian Tournament Friday, September 4 against Swarthmore College at 4 p.m. The Cavaliers also meet Wesley College Friday at 6 p.m. Match opponents and times for Saturday, September 5 are to be determined.
