RADNOR, Pa. – The No. 1 seed Cabrini women's soccer team's reign as Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) champions came to an emotional halt on Wednesday night at Edith Robb Dixon Field as the Cavaliers suffered an 8-7 shootout loss versus No. 5 seed Immaculata University.
After 110 minutes of play ended without a score on either side, it took 26 penalty kick attempts for the winner to be decided. Ironically, senior goalkeeper Jessica Gaburo clinched the victory for the Mighty Macs, beating Cabrini senior goalkeeper Gianna Porretta.
The opening round of PK attempts concluded with each team striking the twine three times. After both sides opened the second set with three straight goals, Immaculata had three opportunities to put the match away.
However, Porretta kept IU at bay until Gaburo's sudden victory score. Gaburo totaled 14 saves for the Mighty Macs throughout regulation and the two overtime periods.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Edwards posted four saves and connected on one goal in the shootout.
Cabrini ninth-year head coach Ken Prothero elected to go with the veteran and more taller Porretta between the pipes after the second overtime. Porretta made three stops in the PK shootout.
The victory qualifies Immaculata to the CSAC Final for the first time in program history. The Mighty Macs will travel to No. 3 seed Centenary College on Saturday, Nov. 6 for the right to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
The loss could potentially mark the close of playing careers for four Cavalier seniors – Porretta, Brianna Conner, Annmarie Kolla and Dana Nardello. Each member of Cabrini's 2010 senior class played an integral role in helping the Cavaliers win the CSAC title and advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2009 for the first time in six seasons.
Cabrini's 14-3-1 overall record positions the Cavaliers for an opportunity to qualify for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament. The Blue & White will learn of its ECAC Tournament fate on Monday, Nov. 8.
