ASTON, Pa. – The 14th-ranked Cabrini men's lacrosse team extended its win streak to seven games with a convincing 22-9 win against Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opponent Neumann University on Saturday afternoon. Senior attackman Casey Grugan became the first player in program history to surpass 300 points for his career in the win.
Grugan, a 2010 Tewaaraton Award candidate, notched nine points with five goals and four assists. He last recorded nine points in a single game, pairing four scores with five assists, in the Cavaliers' 18-9 season-opening win versus Fairleigh Dickinson University in 2009.
Grugan has posted at least one point in 70 straight games, the longest active streak in the country among Division III players. He has also scored at least one goal in an NCAA Division III-record 67 consecutive contests. Grugan is Cabrini's all-time leading scorer, tallying 303 points with 188 goals and 115 assists in 70 career games.
Senior attackman Steve Kapp matched a season-high with six points, scoring two goals and handing our four assists. Junior attackman Paul Skulski and sophomore midfielder Andrew Protenic each posted three points on two scores and one helper.
The Cavaliers' offense tallied 63 shots and boasted 15 players with at least one point. Junior midfielder Dan Terenick, sophomore midfielder Brian Hill and freshman attackman J.T. Ervin each totaled two points on two goals.
Freshman defenseman Andrew Kvech registered his first career point in the win, contributing an assist on Hill's second goal of the contest.
The Blue & White face-off unit, led by juniors Mike Gurenlian and Joe Strain, controlled the draw circle, winning 24-of-34 attempts. Gurenlian won 8-of-8 face-off tries, while Strain went 11-for-13.
Grugan led the Cavaliers in the hustle category, scooping a team-best eight groundballs. Kvech and sophomore midfielder Joe Arrell each collected four groundballs.
Freshman goalkeeper Erick Zarzecki played the first half and posted five saves en route to his 10th win of the season. Sophomore cageminder James Caruso saw his first action of the season since March 6 against Roanoke College, recording three stops in 10 minutes played.
The Cavaliers blitzed the Knights out of the gates, racing to a 10-0 lead with 7:35 left in the second quarter. Cabrini owned a 12-1 advantage at the intermission.
Grugan scored three goals in the first half. Skulski and Terenick each netted two scores in the opening 30 minutes.
The Blue & White paced Neumann through three quarters, 15-4. The Cavaliers pushed their lead to 14 goals, 22-8, with 3:53 left in the final period.
The victory is Cabrini's 76th straight against a CSAC opponent since the 2001 season. Including the postseason, the Cavaliers have won 93 consecutive games versus a league foe.
Senior midfielder Matt Toth and junior attackman Justin Mailkoux led the Neumann offense with four goals on three goals and one assist.
Cabrini (10-3, 6-0) resumes its non-conference schedule on Friday, April 23 at Centennial Conference opponent Washington College. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
