SCRANTON, Pa. – The 11th-ranked Cabrini men's lacrosse team has completed its 10th consecutive unbeaten regular season in conference play, downing Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opponent Marywood University, 15-8, on the road Thursday night. The Cavaliers' ninth straight win extends their NCAA Division III-best conference win streak to 77 straight games.
Including the postseason, Cabrini has won 94 consecutive contests against CSAC opponents dating back to the 2001 season. The victory against the Pacers also assures the Cavaliers the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the CSAC Tournament.
Senior attackman and 2010 Tewaaraton Award candidate Casey Grugan and junior midfielder Paul Skulski each tallied six points. Skulski netted four goals and handed out two assists. Grugan paired three scores with three assists.
Grugan has recorded at least one point in 72 straight games, the longest active streak in the country among Division III players. He has also scored at least one goal in an NCAA Division III-record 69 consecutive contests.
Senior attackman Steve Kapp (3G) and freshman attackman Bobby Thorp (1G, 2A) each notched three points. Junior midfielder Dan Terenick chipped in two points with one goal and one assist.
Senior midfielder Rich Romanelli, sophomore attackman Brian Hill and freshman attackman Ryan Sankey each scored one goal.
The Cavaliers posted a 38-34 advantage in groundballs. Sophomore defenseman John McSorley and freshman midfielder Joe Hughes each tallied five groundballs.
Cabrini lost the face-off battle for the first time since March 11 at home against Kenyon College. Marywood won 14-of-24 draws. Junior Mike Gurenlian led the Cavaliers in the circle, winning 8-of-17 face-offs.
Freshman goalkeeper Erick Zarzecki posted his 12th win of the season for the Blue & White between the pipes with nine saves.
The Cavaliers began the contest with six unanswered goals and led 7-1 at the end of the first quarter. Grugan sparked the Cabrini offense off the opening face-off with two goals and an assist in the opening eight minutes of the period.
Grugan, Cabrini's all-time leader in career points (318), now needs just eight assists to tie Athletic Hall of Fame honoree Tom Lemieux (131) for the program's top mark.
The Cavaliers held a six-goal advantage, 9-3, at the intermission. Grugan added his second assist of the game on Romanell's tally with 55 seconds left before halftime.
The Pacers pulled within five goals, 9-4, early in the third quarter. However, the Blue & White responded with three straight scores to push its lead back to 12-4 with 3:05 left before the fourth quarter. Skulski scored two goals separated by less three minutes during that stretch.
Kapp found the back of the cage for the third time in the game at the 10:11 mark of the final period. Grugan capped the Cavaliers' scoring with 4:33 left.
Freshman midfielder Gregory Nestor led the Pacers' attack with three points on three goals. Junior goalkeeper Jesse Habich notched 16 saves for Marywood in the loss.
Cabrini's 10 straight conference regular season titles have all been won under the leadership of 10th-year head coach Steve Colfer. The win against the Pacers also stands as the 135th in Colfer's career.
Cabrini (12-3, 6-0) will host the semifinal round of the CSAC Tournament at Edith Robb Dixon Field on Tuesday, May 3. Opponent and game time to be announced.
