CHESTER, Pa. – The 16th-ranked Cabrini men's lacrosse team captured its fourth straight win Saturday afternoon, rolling past Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) opponent and local rival Widener University, 15-5, in a HEADstrong Foundation Rivalry Game.
Senior attackman and 2010 Tewaaraton Award candidate Casey Grugan, sophomore midfielder Brian Hill and freshman midfielder Andrew Protenic each recorded a team-best three points. Grugan and Protenic both netted three goals, while Hill paired one score with two helpers.
Senior attackman Rich Romanelli and freshman midfielder Joe Hughes each scored two goals. Senior attackman Steve Kapp and junior attackman Paul Skulski each added two assists.
Cabrini won the groundball battle against the Pride, 33-24. Hughes recorded a team-best seven groundballs and Hill scooped five.
The Cavaliers won 14-of-23 face-offs. Junior Mike Gurenlian notched 8-of-12 draw victories and Protenic went a perfect 3-for-3.
Freshman goalkeeper Erick Zarzecki went the distance for the Blue & White in between the pipes and posted eight saves in the win.
Cabrini led Widener 4-1 after the first quarter. Hughes opened the contest's scoring with his second goal of the season less than three minutes following the opening draw. Grugan ended the first period with a man-up goal with 33 seconds remaining.
The Cavaliers owned a 7-3 advantage at the intermission. Cabrini held a six-goal cushion, 7-1, when Romanelli found the back of the cage at the 7:01 mark of the second quarter. The Pride closed the half with two goals in the final 6:55.
The Blue & White out-scored Widener, 6-0, in the third period. Six different Cavaliers tickled the twine, including Protenic's man-up score at the 3:39 mark. In the last four games, Cabrini is 14-for-24 on extra-man opportunities.
Protenic added a second man-up goal with 11:43 left in the fourth quarter. Grugan netted his final goal and the Cavaliers' last tally at the 9:31 mark.
Grugan has recorded at least one point in 67 consecutive games, the longest active Division III streak in the country, and scored at least one goal in an NCAA Division III-record 64 straight contests.
Senior attackman Cory Malampy led the Widener attack with three points on two goals and one assist. Sophomore midfielder Mark Kane, junior midfielder Kevin McLemore and senior midfielder Kevin Rider each scored one goal. Freshman goalkeeper Bobby Schulter recorded 12 saves in the loss.
The victory is the Cavaliers' third straight against the Pride. Cabrini knocked off Widener 15-11 at home last season and 10-9 on the road in 2008.
The HEADstrong Foundation is a charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for blood cancer research. The foundation was started in honor of Nick “Head” Collelouri, a 2004 Ridley High School graduate and Hofstra University men's lacrosse student-athlete when he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Collelouri lost his 14-month battle with cancer on November 28, 2006.
Cabrini (7-3, 2-0) resumes its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) regular season schedule on Wednesday, April 7 at Gwynedd-Mercy College. Game time against the Griffins is set for 4 p.m.
