RADNOR, Pa. –
Delaware Valley College scored the eventual game-winning goal less than six minutes after the opening whistle and held off a late charge from the Cabrini field hockey team in 1-0 decision on Tuesday night at Edith Robb Dixon Field. Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Donahue posted six saves for the Cavaliers in the loss.

Delaware Valley senior forward Holly Rich deposited the decisive tally at the 5:55 mark of the first half. Off an Aggies penalty corner, Donahue stopped an initial shot before Rich gathered the rebound in a scramble and found the back of the cage.

Delaware Valley carried its 1-0 advantage into the intermission and dodged several second half bullet in maintaining the victory. The Cavaliers pressured junior goalkeeper Hollis Hancock throughout the final 35 minutes, but could not add the equalizer.

Freshman midfielder Erin McLaughlin nearly tied the match at 1-1 with five minutes remaining. Charging down the right side in front of the Cabrini bench, McLaughlin beat an Aggies defender before uncorking a shot just wide across the cage and past Hancock.

The Cavaliers out-shot Delaware Valley, 13-12, for the contest. Junior forward Lauren Alessi, junior midfielder Maura Gordon and sophomore forward Lindsey Atzert each recorded three shot attempts.

Donahue made key saves down the stretch, but it was sophomore midfielder Taylor McGarvey who kept the Blue & White in striking distance. McGarvey lunging save with a wide open cage reserved just a one-goal advantage for the Aggies with 10 minutes left in the second half.

Hancock tallied seven saves for Delaware Valley in the victory. The Aggies have opened the 2010 season with five wins in their first six outings.

Cabrini (1-3) continues its non-conference regular season schedule on the road versus Albright College on Thursday, Sept. 16. Game time against the Lions is set for 7 p.m.
