HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The No. 17 Cabrini men's lacrosse team extended the nation's longest regular season conference win streak to 81 games with a convincing 19-7 win against Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opponent Centenary College on Saturday afternoon. Including the postseason, the Cavaliers have won 100 consecutive contests against conference foes since the 2001 season.
Head coach Steve Colfer, in his 11th season at Cabrini, is the architect behind the Cavaliers' more than a decade-long success in the CSAC. Colfer, owner of a 146-41 career record, has guided Cabrini to 10 straight conference titles and nine consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Senior attackman Paul Skulski and senior midfielder Dan Terenick led a Cabrini offense that boasted 13 players with at least one point. Skulski paired two goals with three assists, while Terenick netted three scores and dished two helpers.
Junior midfielder Joe Arrell and sophomore attackman Jeff Crosby each posted four points with three goals and one assist. Sophomore midfielder Andrew Layne and freshman attackman Matt Biegel each totaled two points on two goals.
The Cavaliers owned a convincing 49-27 advantage in groundballs. Senior midfielder Jimmy Barraclough, junior attackman Brian Hill and sophomore midfielder Brandon Dunn led the Blue & White in the hustle department, each scooping four loose balls.
Much of Cabrini's success on the offensive end can be attributed to a 23-for-29 performance in the face-off circle. Senior Joe Strain went 5-for-6 on draw attempts, while Dunn (5-for-5) and senior Mark Hamilton (4-for-4) were perfect at the X.
Freshman goalkeeper Erick Zarzecki went the distance between the pipes and tallied seven saves for his 23rd career victory.
Behind each of Terenick's three goals, Cabrini sprinted to a 7-0 advantage following the opening face-off. The Cavaliers owned an 11-2 advantage at the intermission.
Skulski scored one goal and distributed three assists before the break. He is now only four points shy of becoming only the fourth player in program history to reach 200 career points. In 69 career games played, Skulski ranks fifth all-time with 196 points on 102 goals and 94 assists.
Centenary (5-4, 1-3 CSAC) opened the second half with a goal from Robert Nuzzolese. The Cyclones out-scored the Cavaliers in the third quarter, 4-3. However, Hill's goal at the 3:14 mark provided the Blue & White with an eight-goal advantage, 14-6, heading into the final stanza.
Cabrini opened the fourth period with four unanswered goals, including one from Skulski, off a feed from Terenick, with 9:59 remaining.
Conor Nolan led the Centenary offense with four points on three goals and one assist. Nuzzolese and Joe Swantkoski each netted two goals.
Kyle McVay turned away 15 shots for the Cyclones in the loss.
The victory is the Cavaliers' fourth in four games all-time against Centenary.
Cabrini (8-4, 4-0 CSAC) plays its final non-conference game of the regular season at home against Centennial Conference foe Washington College on Saturday, April 23. Game time against the Shoremen is set for 1 p.m.
