RADNOR, Pa. – With one game remaining in the regular season, the Cabrini men's lacrosse team has clinched the No. 1 seed for the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament following a steady 12-4 win against Marywood University on Wednesday afternoon at Edith Robb Dixon Field. The victory extends the nation's longest regular season conference win streak to 82 games.
Senior midfielder Paul Skulski and freshman Matt Biegel led the Cavaliers' offense, each recording three points with one goal and two assists. Junior attackman Brian Hill and sophomore midfielder Bobby Thorp both netted two goals.
Senior attackman Jordan Coeyman (1G, 1A), junior midfielder Joe Arrell (1G, 1A) and sophomore midfielder Joe Hughes (2A) each posted two points. The Cabrini offense notched 51 shot attempts against just 19 from Marywood.
The Cavaliers also won the groundball battle, 44-28. Hill led the Blue & White with seven, while Skulski scooped six. Junior defenseman John McSorley caused a team-high four turnovers in addition to netting one goal.
Cabrini finished the contest with an 11-10 advantage in the face-off circle, but had to overcome a 3-for-10 performance in the first half. Senior Mike Gurenlian led the charge, winning 9-of-14 draws. Gurenlian's 330 career face-off wins is now just one shy of tying the program's all-time record, owned by current assistant coach Mike Dolente (331; 2006-09).
Sophomore goalkeeper Erick Zarzecki went the distance in his 29th consecutive start between the pipes, recording 10 saves for his 24th career win.
Behind seven unanswered goals, the Cavaliers claimed a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 7-1 advantage at the intermission. Marywood's Greg Nester scored the game's first goal before Cabrini seized control mid-way through the first quarter.
Hill sparked the first half run with his first goal of the game at the 4:47 mark of the first quarter. Biegel handed out two assists in the opening period.
Following Nester's goal, the Cavaliers' defense kept the Pacers' attack scoreless for more than 32 minutes. Trailing 8-1, Marywood netted its second goal of the game, a man-down tally from Marcus Janda, with 12:14 left in the third quarter.
McSorley closed the third quarter with a goal off a feed from Hughes. Skulski set up two goals for the Blue & White offense late in the fourth quarter.
Janda, Nester, Riley Dobel and George Downey IV each netted one goal for Marywood. Jesse Habich tallied 14 saves for the Pacers in the loss.
The Cabrini win clinches the No. 1 seed for the CSAC Tournament for the 11th straight year under 11th-year head coach Steve Colfer. The victory also goes into the books as the 147th in Colfer's career with the Blue & White.
Prior to the game's opening face-off, Colfer and his coaching staff honored the team's 10 seniors in their final regular season home game. The Cavaliers' senior class has been a part of three NCAA Tournament teams, three CSAC championships and 55 overall victories.
Cabrini (9-5, 5-0) will look to complete its 11th consecutive perfect regular season against conference opponents on Saturday, April 30 versus Immaculata University. Game time against the Mighty Macs is set for 1 p.m.
