IMMACULATA, Pa. – For the 11th consecutive season under 11th-year head coach Steve Colfer, the Cabrini men's lacrosse team has finished its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) schedule with an unblemished regular season mark. The Cavaliers scored seven goals in the third quarter and limited Immaculata University to only two second half tallies en route to a 17-5 victory on Saturday at Draper Walsh Stadium.
Senior Mike Gurenlian won 13-of-15 face-off attempts and took over sole possession of the Cavaliers' all-time career record with 343. Heading into Saturday's game, Gurenlian needed just two draw victories to overcome the program's previous recordholder, current assistant head coach Mike Dolente (331, 2006-09).
Senior attackman Jordan Coeyman powered the Cabrini attack with a team-best six points on five goals and one assist. Senior midfielder Paul Skulski (2G, 2A) and senior midfielder Dan Terenick (3G, 1A) each contributed four points.
Skulski's two-assist performance against the Mighty Macs makes him only the third Cavalier in program history to reach 100 career assists, joining Tom Lemieux (131, 1999-02) and Casey Grugan (128, 2007-10).
Terenick's four-point afternoon brings him within just four points of 100 for his career at Cabrini. He would be the second member of the Blue & White to accomplish the scoring feat this season, joining junior Brian Hill.
Hill aided the Cavaliers on the attack, netting three goals. Sophomore attackman Jeff Crosby also posted three points with two scores and one helper.
Cabrini went 19-for-23 in the face-off circle for the game, including a 10-for-12 clip in the second half. Senior Joe Strain complemented Gurenlian's efforts with a 6-for-7 performance on draws.
The Cavaliers owned a convincing 43-23 advantage in groundballs. Senior defenseman Steve Heaps, sophomore longstick midfielder Tim Grenier and freshman midfielder JoJo Cooper each scooped a team-best four.
Sophomore goalkeeper Erick Zarzecki made his 34th consecutive start in between the pipes for the Blue & White and made in 18 saves in just over 53 minutes played. Freshman Steve Oppenheimer came on in relief and notched one stop.
Depsite scoring the game's first two goals, from Coeyman and sophomore midfielder Bobby Thorp, Cabrini held just a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Cavaliers scored the first three goals of the second period, but led just 7-3 at the intermission.
Immaculata cut its deficit to three goals, 7-4, early in the third quarter before the Blue & White seized control of the contest with an 8-0 run to close the period and begin the fourth.
Coeyman, Hill and Terenick each netted two goals during the decisive run. Coeyman added an assist on sophomore midfielder Joe Hughes' goal to open the final quarter. He added his fifth goal of the game for good measure with 4:14 remaining.
The Cabrini offense converted 17 goals on 42 shots (.405), its third most efficient offensive performance of the season following wins against Centenary College (.432) on April 16 and Shenandoah University (.413) on March 26.
Dante Tuscai led the Immaculata (6-8, 3-3 CSAC) offense with three points on three goals. Joey Shallow contributed two points with one score and one helper.
Jon Diodati tallied 13 saves for the Mighty Macs in the loss.
The victory improves the Cavaliers' record to 6-0 all-time against Immaculata, including a 26-3 win in the 2010 CSAC Semifinal. Cabrini will host Immaculata in the CSAC Semifinal on Tuesday.
The win also stands as the 148th in Colfer's head coaching career and extends the nation's longest active regular season conference win streak to 83 games. Including the postseason, the Blue & White has won 102 consecutive contests against CSAC opponents.
Cabrini (10-5, 6-0 CSAC)) earned the No. 1 seed in the postseason tournament and begins its quest for an 11th straight CSAC crown on Tuesday, May 3 at Edith Robb Dixon Field against Immaculata. Game time against the Mighty Macs is set to be announced.
