RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini College field hockey team fell from the ranks of the CSAc's unbeaten teams today with its 2-1 loss to Gwynedd-Mercy College. With two league games remaining in the regular season, the Cavaliers now stand at 4-1 in the conference and 6-7 overall.
Both teams created early scoring chances, as both recorded saves in the first eight minutes of action. The Griffins, however found the back of the net in the 12th minute as junior Sarah Jackson opened the scoring with her ninth goal of the campaign. Cabrini goaltender
Genevieve Paulin saved Jackson's first attempt but Jackson converted the rebound for the score.
The Griffins extended their lead in the 22nd minute when freshman Katie O'Neill converted a pass from senior Erin Gorenflo into her fourth goal of the year.
The Blue and White trailed by that 2-0 score after 35 minutes of play after failing to turn any of their nine penalty corners into goals.
After the halftime break, the Cavaliers discovered a renewed energy as they kept the ball in the Gwynedd-Mercy end for much of the half. After eight second half penalty corners and seven shots, including one from sophomore
Taylor Carroll that hit the cross bar, the Blue and White finally found the back of the net.
In the game's 54th minute, sophomore
Karlie Gruccio collected a loose ball in front of Gwynedd-Mercy's goal and poked it past Griffins goaltender Kelly Kruk. Gruccio's fifth goal of the season cut Cabrini's deficit to 2-1.
Both teams fought to control the game's final 15 minutes as the ball traveled back and forth from end to end. A Gorenflo shot nearly extended Gwynedd-Mercy's lead but hit the post. Cabrini forced two corners in the game's final two minutes but a Kruk save on a shot by senior
Taylor McGarvey thwarted the attempt.
The Cavaliers outshot the Griffins 15-11 on the game, but both clubs recorded seven shots on goal. Gruccio's six shots led the Blue and White, while senior
Lindsey Atzert and fresman
Kerry Anne Farrell added three each.
Paulin finished the game with five saves.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday, October 17 when they host Keystone College in their final home game of the regular season. The action is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
