Atzert's Career Day Sends Field Hockey to CSAC Title Game

Box Score

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini College field hockey team advanced to its fifth consecutive CSAC championship game on the strength of today's 5-0 CSAC semifinal victory over Keystone College.  The victory sets a third consecutive title game between the Blue and White and the Gwynedd-Mercy College Griffins.

Senior Lindsey Atzert was determined to continue her collegiate career and that of her senior teammates and it showed.  The senior tied a career high, which she set earlier this season, with four goals and set a new career best with nine total points, topping a pair of eight point outings this season.

Atzert wasted no time in putting her imprint on the game as she opened the scoring in the game's first minute.  Fellow senior Taylor McGarvey turner the right corner and found Atzert alone in front of the goal.  In the 17th minute, Atzert was on the business end of a cross from fellow senior Katie Savage

The Cavaliers took the 2-0 lead into the halftime break despite the opening stanza being played very evenly, with both clubs recording five shots.   The Blue and White was able to fire three of its shots on goal, while the Giants could only muster one on their seven penalty corners.

Atzert set the Cavaliers on the right path after the break as Taylor found her less than 90 second s into play for the hat trick.  In the 44th minute, Atzert collected her fourth goal as she was able to get her stick on a loose ball in front of Keystone's goal.

The senior was bidding for a fifth tally on the day in the 57th minute when sophomore Karlie Gruccio redirected an Atzert shot into the back of the net for the sophomore's 8th goal of the season.

Atzert's career day gives her 38 career goals, including 17 this season, and 98 career points.

The Blue and White held the Giants to just nine shots on the day, two on target.  Cabrini's junior goaltender Genevieve Paulin recorded one save and senior Rita McKeown was on-hand to save the other.

The Cavaliers will return to Gwynedd, Pa. where they will look to avenge a 3-0 loss in last year's CSAC championship game.  The game is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. Cabrini downed the Griffins 3-1 in the 2010 title game.

The top seeded Griffins advanced to Saturday's title game after disposing of Marywood University 9-2 this evening.  Gwynedd-Mercy jumped put the game away early, as it carried a 4-0 lead into halftime.  Juniors Sarah Jackson and Maria Karidas each recorded three goasl and an assist in the win.

The Griffins handed Cabrini its only conference losses over the last two seasons, including a 2-1 defeat on October 13.
