GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Cabrini College field hockey team fell short of its third Colonial States Athletic Conference title today as the Cavaliers fell to Gwynedd-Mercy 5-1. The loss drops the Blue and White to 9-9 on the season.
The Griffins jumped out to an early lead, as junior Sarah Jackson found the back of the net in the 12th minute. Nine minutes later, Gwynedd-Mercy's Caitlin Donahue deflected a Jackson pass into the net for a 2-0 lead.
Thirty-two seconds later, the Cavaliers found themselves in a deep hole as Maria Karides connected on a penalty stroke, extending Gwynedd-Mercy's lead to 3-0.
The Blue and White regrouped during halftime as senior
Kate Solewin found the net just 48 seconds in the second half. The score was Solewin's second and the assist, credited to fellow senior
Lindsey Atzert, marked her 99th career point.
The Griffins got the goal back in the 61st minute on Jackson's second goal of the day. Sophomore Brittany Wilson closed the scoring in the final seconds with an unassisted goal.
The Griffins outshot the Cavaliers 12-11, while Cabrini secured one more penalty corner than Gwynedd-Mercy 8-7.

Karlie Gruccio led the Blue and White with four shots, including three on goal. Atzert added three shots. Junior goaltender
Genevieve Paulin recorded four saves in the loss.
The loss could mark the final game in the careers of Cabrini's seven seniors,
Colleen Anastasi, Atzert,
Vicky King,
Taylor McGarvey,
Rita McKeown,
Katie Savage, and Solewin. As a group, the ladies have appeared in 394 games, scoring 165 points on 59 goals and 47 assists. The ladies have posted 44 career wins, including a 25-5 CSAC mark, with 25 wins coming at Edith Robb Field.
The Cavaliers will now wait until Monday or Tuesday to see if they receive an invitation to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) postseason tournament.
