GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Cabrini College won its 90th consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) regular season game today, a 20-6 win at Gwynedd-Mercy College. The win also clinches the number one seed in next week's CSAC tournament.
The victory marks Cabrini's 111th consecutive regular season or postseason victory over a CSAC opponent and improves the Blue and White to 13-2 on the year and 7-0 in the league.
Cabrini's dynamic duo of junior
Bobby Thorp and senior
Brian Hill led the Cavaliers' offensive attack, combining for 11 points on the day. Thorp tied a career high with five goals while Hill recorded his third six point performance of the season.
Freshman
Anthony DiSanzo opened the scoring at the 10:17 mark of the 1st quarter with his 12th goal of the year. Freshman
Mike Leyden doubled the Cabrini lead eight minutes into play on Hill's first of four assists.
A pair of Gwynedd-Mercy goals evened the score with 1:50 to play in the period. The Blue and White responded 12 seconds later as Hill found Thorp for a 3-2 lead. Thorp extended the lead with :38 left in the quarter with his second tally.
DiSanzo's second goal of the day came less than three minutes into the second quarter on another Hill assist. Freshman
Damian Sobieski's unassisted goal gave Cabrini a 6-2 lead with 9:50 to play before the half.
Senior
Andrew Zelinski found sophomore
Corey Elmer at the 7:05 mark for Cabrini's seventh score of the day. The Blue and White carried a 7-3 lead into halftime.
The Griffins got a goal back in the first minute of the third quarter, before the Cavaliers took control of the game. Cabrini closed the quarter with eight unanswered goals.
Hill's first goal of the day game with just under nine minutes to play in the period. Thorp completed his hat trick at the 5:26 mark when sophomore
JoJo Cooper found him.
Goals by junior
Andrew Layne and Sobieski came 17 seconds apart, giving Cabrini an 11-4 advantage game in the third quarter. One minute later DiSanzo and Sobioeski tallied goals, separated by just 13 seconds.
As they have done throughout the season, the Blue and White played through the quarter's final whistle, as Hill and Elmer netted goals with :50 and :03 remaining, respectively. After 45 minutes of play, Cabrini held a commanding 15-4 lead.
Gwynedd-Mercy opened the fourth quarter with a pair of goals but the Cavaliers weren't done yet. Senior
Joe Arrell's fifth goal of the season came just under five minutes into the period.
Sophomore
Matt Biegel got into the action with a pair of tallies midway through the period. Thorp closed the scoring with his fourth and fifth goals of the day late at the 7:56 and 5:20 marks.
Freshman
Anthony DiNenno sparked Cabrini's offense, winning 18 of his 26 faceoff opportunities and securing 10 ground balls. Cooper and junior defenseman
Tyler Grau combined to scoop 11 ground balls.
Senior defenseman
John McSorley led the Blue and White with two caused turnovers.
Junior goaltender,
Erick Zarzecki, who leads the nation in goals against average, continued his solid play between the pipes with 11 saves on the day.
Cabrini will host Centenary College in one of two CSAC semifinal games on Tuesday. The other semifinal pits second seeded Marywood University against the number three seed Griffins. Neither game time has been announced.
The winners will meet in Saturday's championship game for the title and the league's automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.
