BALTIMORE, Md. – The Cabrini College field hockey team opened its Colonial States Athletic Conference schedule with a bang, topping Notre Dame (Md.) University 7-0 today in Baltimore. The Cavaliers second consecutive victory improves their record to 2-4.
The teams remained even through much of the first half but the Blue and White found its scoring touch in the final 12 minutes of the first half. In the 24th minute, senior defender
Rita McKeown fired a shot from the center of the field that found the back of the net. The goal was the second goal of her career and first since October 10, 2009.
Just about 20 seconds later, the Cavaliers doubled their lead as freshman
Tiffany Phillips found fellow freshman
Kerry Anne Farrell (pictured above) for the 2-0 lead. The connection resulted in Farrell's first career goal and Phillips' first collegiate point.
The Blue and White went on another scoring flurry late in the first half. In the 33rd minute, Farrell found junior
Stephanie Toomey for the first of her two scores on the day. Toomey's second came two minutes later, as the junior tallied an unassisted goal, her team-leading fourth of the season.
Fourteen seconds later, senior
Katie Savage got into the action, converting a Farrell pass into the senior's second goal of the season.
Cabrini's 5-0 lead at the half was a result of an overpowering offensive effort. The Blue and White outshot the Gators 26-0, forcing Notre Dame's goaltender Emily Langton to record 11 saves before the break.
Freshman
Meghan Loughman got into the in the 51st minute with an unassisted goal, the first of her collegiate career. Sophomore
Vic Sahina closed the scoring in the 65th minute when she redirected a pass from sophomore
Sara Kazemian into the Gators' net.
The Cavaliers recorded 17 penalty corners to Notre Dame's one and outshot the Gators 31-4. Cabrini's 34 shots are the most for a Cavaliers team since a 37 shot effort in a 5-0 win at Cedar Crest College on October 13, 2010.
Farrell finished the game with the first four point of her career, with a goal and a pair of assists.
Savage and Toomey combined for 14 shots, including 12 on goal. Junior goaltender
