Atzert's 4 Goals Lift Cavaliers to 7-3 Victory

Box Score

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini college field hockey team's scoring touch was on display tonight at Edith Robb Dixon Field as the Cavaliers exploded for a 7-3 non-conference win over Widener University.  Senior Lindsey Atzert posted a career-high four goals in the victory.

Atzert's four goal outburst represents Cabrini's highest scoring individual performance since at least 2002.  The senior scored three consecutive goals in a nine minute stretch of the second half that gave the Blue and White a commanding 6-3 advantage.

Cabrini junior Erin McLaughlin opened the scoring in the fifth minute as she converted a loose ball of a rebound into her first goal of the season.  The Pride evened the score 10 minutes later when  junior Brittany Gunderson found freshman Meghan Garvey.

Atzert's first goal came in the 20th minute as when she collected a pass from senior Kate Solewin and deposited it in the net.  The Pride again found the equalizer as Gunderson tied the score in the 24th minute.

The teams took a 2-2 score into halftime.  The Blue and White outshot Widener 10-3 before the break and secured six penalty corners to Widener's zero.

Seven minutes into the second half, Widener took its first lead of the game when junior Samantha Balonis found junior Devin Biglin for her second assist of the contest.

The Cavaliers leveled the score in the 47th minute when senior Taylor McGarvey found freshman Kerry Anne Farrell in the middle.

Just over eight minutes later, Atzert took the game over.  The senior netted the game winner in the 55th minute on McGarvey's second helper of the night.  Thirty seconds later, senior Katie Savage found McGarvey to complete her hat trick.

Atzert's final tally came in the 64th minute off an assist from Farrell.  Solewin put the game away in the 67th minute with her first goal of the season.

Atzert's four goal outing puts her atop Cabrini's goal list, tied with junior Stephanie Toomey with four goals.  Atzert also leads the club with nine points.

After her standout performance in yesterday's win, Farrell's goal and assist now give her seven points in the last two games.  Solewin and McLaughlin also finished the game with a goal and an assist, while McGarvey notched a pair of helpers.

Garvey and Gunderson each recorded a goal and assist for the Pride.  Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Kameris tallied seven saves in the loss.

The Cavaliers (3-4) will return to CSAC action on Saturday when they welcome Marywood University to Edith Robb Dixon Field.  Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. as part of Cabrini's Family Weekend festivities.
