GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa – The Cabrini field hockey team improved to 4-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference with tonight's 4-2 win at Gwynedd Mercy University. The Cavaliers' fourth consecutive victory also evens the team's overall record at 6-6.
The win marks the Blue and White's first win over the Griffins in their last four meetings, including losses in the 2011 and 2012 CSAC championship games.
Sophomore
Kerry Anne Farrell opened the scoring in the 11th minute when she deflected a pass from freshman
Taylor Mack for her team-leading 12th goal of the season. The Griffins wasted little time evening the score as Stephanie Bracco's goal tied the game at 1-1 less than one minute later.
Senior
Erin McLaughlin netted the first of her two goals in the 25th minute when she converted a breakaway opportunity. The Cavaliers carried its 2-1 lead into the halftime break after outshooting Gwynedd Mercy 10-5 in the opening 35 minutes.
Mack extended the lead in the 53rd minute when she converted a rebound of her own shot. For the second time in the game, the Cavaliers surrendered a quick goal as Katie Hickson sliced Cabrini's lead to 3-2 57 seconds after Mack's goal.
McLaughlin put the game away in the 61st minute as she collected a loose ball in the crease and converted the unassisted tally.
While Gwynedd Mercy earned a 13-10 advantage in shots, the Cavaliers were up to the task. Senior goaltender
Genevieve Paulin recorded nine saves in the victory. McLaughlin led Cabrini with four shots on the night, while Mack fired three and Farrell a pair.
Maria Karidas led the Griffins (6-7, 2-1 CSAC) with eight shots, while netminder Kelly Kruk recorded five saves.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Aston, Pa. to face Neumann University (6-8, 2-0 CSAC). Game time is slated for 5:00 p.m.
