Field Hockey Drops CSAC Finale 2-1 at Keystone

Box Score

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Cabrini field hockey team suffered its first conference loss today at the sticks of the Keystone Giants at Scranton's Riverfront Sports Complex.  The loss drops the Blue and White to 6-1 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference and 8-7 overall.

The Cavaliers close their CSAC slate in first place and, with one nonconference game remaining, will wait for official word on their postseason tournament fate.

After a scoreless opening 23 minutes of play, a span of 1:20 turned out to be the difference in the game.  Keystone's Raisha Piper found Kelsey Drozda on a penalty corner at the 24:50 mark for the game's first goal.  Eighty seconds later, Drozda found Christina Nevers to give Keystone a 2-0 lead.

Despite outshooting Keystone 10-5 and earning nine penalty corners to Keystone's four, the Cavaliers could not find the back of the net.

Cabrini continued its offensive onslaught, firing 10 second half shots.  Senior Stephanie Toomey finally broke through in the 43rd minute when sophomore Jen Webb found her.  The Blue and White attempted five shots and three penalty corners in the final 27 minutes of play but could not level the score.

The Cavaliers totaled 20 shots on the day, including 15 on target.  Junior Karlie Gruccio led the way with seven, while sophomore Kerry Anne Farrell added five.  Senior goaltender Genevieve Paulin recorded five saves in the loss.

Keystone goaltender Nichole Blank tallied 12 saves for the Giants (5-11, 3-3 CSAC).

Cabrini will close the regular season on Saturday when they host Alvernia University.  The action is scheduled for 12 Noon at Edith Robb Dixon Field.  The game will also mark the final regular season home game for seniors Samantha LaMaina, Erin McLaughlin, Genevieve Paulin and Stephianie Toomey.
